Delegates of Turku University of Applied Sciences, which is a member of the CARPE consortium, have visited the University of Debrecen. On Monday and Tuesday they learned about UD’s degree programmes and discussed potential future research cooperation. The topics of the meetings also included the international mobility of students and researchers.

The University of Debrecen has announced its next round of applications in the Erasmus programme for the academic year 2023/2024. More than 250 students will have a chance to complete a part-time study abroad or internship program in Europe or in a distant part of the world. The deadline for the applications is 15 March.

Our international academic relations and projects of cooperation were both promoted and strengthened by the interdisciplinary conference titled Kazakh-Hungarian cultural narratives, social and economic diversity. The conference was hosted jointly on Friday by the Department of Ethnography of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen and the ambassadorial system of National Association of Doctoral Students.

The university sports club DEAC can now boast of yet another outstanding sporting achievement: Gábor Máthé won the hearing-impaired competition at the Australian Open tennis championships at the weekend. The Debrecen-based competitor, prepared and trained by legendary athlete Andrea Temesvári, was able to compete among the top eight female and male deaf tennis players of the world in the opening Grand Slam tournament of the year.

The University of Debrecen took the 89th place in the thematic ranking issued by Round University Ranking (for natural sciences). With this result, UD, the only Hungarian institution of higher education in the diamond league, was ranked in the top 100 in the 2022 rankings of RUR.

Both director Pál Csontos and institute secretary László Erik Kovács of the Confucius Institute of the Faculty of Humanities (BTK) of the University of Debrecen (UD) have recently received a certificate of appreciation from Tianjin Foreign Studies University (TFSU) for their outstanding work in promoting Chinese culture in Hungary.

Writing Center, an online mentoring program operated by the Institute of English and American Studies of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen, based on the assistance of senior MA and Ph.D. students acting as tutors and coaches to their lower-year peers, will continue to be offered in the upcoming spring semester, too.

“Komondor”, a supercomputer with the highest computing capacity in Hungary, has been installed at the Kassai Street campus of UD. It will support the work of UD teachers and researchers. The computer of the Governmental Agency for IT Development will increase the currently available HPC capacity by ten times.

The Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Debrecen offers up-to-date knowledge, practice-oriented education and a new master’s course to students, who can study in Debrecen, Nyíregyháza and Szolnok.

Engineers, biologists, chemists, geographers, mathematicians and physicists have received their degrees at the University of Debrecen. A total of 229 students have graduated from the Faculty.

The Faculty of Informatics of UD provides students with up-to-date knowledge in data science and artificial intelligence, opportunities to obtain industry certificates, and a good chance to land a job after graduation. The applicants can choose from three bachelor, five master and an undivided programmes. This year the Faculty launches a master’s course in data science.

Major events, a record number of articles, and a tragic loss – The Press Centre of the University of Debrecen has closed a demanding but successful year. The Centre that has been named after the late Ildiko M. Tóth who led the Centre and died last year released about a thousand university articles, and contributed to over 30,000 media appearances.

The Laboratory of Biomechanics of the University of Debrecen has purchased a cutting-edge holographic device that allows more accurate surgical interventions. Biologist Katalin Karikó, who patented synthetic mRNA vaccine technologies, has offered part of the amount she had received with the Debrecen Award for Molecular Medicine to support the Laboratory.

The London-based Routledge has published a book entitled Vikings of the Steppe. The author is Csete Katona, a young assistant lecturer who works at the Department of Medieval and Early Modern History of the Institute of History.
