A new type of fluorine-containing compounds chemically related to antitumour and antiviral agents, produced at the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Pharmacy, could play a role in the treatment of many serious diseases in the future. The scientific article on this topic was selected as one of the flagship publications of January by the Department of Chemical Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

The leaders of the University of Debrecen and representatives of three faculties discussed the strengthening of existing cooperation and the establishment of further relations in the Central Asian country. On May 24-26, 2023, the #CARPE2023 international scientific traveling conference was hosted by Glasgow, Scotland. The University of Debrecen was represented at the conference by a delegation of twenty, led by László Csernoch, vice-rector for science.

The foundation stone of the building of National Manufacturing-Research-Education Plant and Faculty of Pharmacy has been laid. The most recent facility of the University of Debrecen is located in the industrial park of our institution on the street called Vezér utca. State Secretary for Innovation and Higher Education Balázs Hankó, who attended in the event, praised the activities of the University of Debrecen linking education and research and development as a model to follow.

Researchers of UD have developed a technology that allows the manufacturing of a new dietary supplement by extracting antocianin from sour cherry. The consortium comprised of the university and Sorapharm Ltd. received an EU grant of over HUF 1.5 billion for the project. The dietary supplement developed in the framework of the project has been registered by the National Institute of Pharmacy and Nutrition. The results of the project were reported at UD on Thursday.

The new building of the Faculty of Pharmacy of UD will serve as a facility for low-volume manufacturing of medicinal products, medical food and dietary supplements, in addition to education and research. Designed by the Pyxis Nautica Architect Studio, the National Manufacturing, Research and Educational Facility will be constructed in 2023.

János Roszik, researcher of the MD Anderson Cancer Centre of the University of Texas will join the Lendület Genome Structure and Recombination research group of the University of Debrecen. In the framework of the Fulbright programme, János Roszik will spend three months working with the UD research group in a project that aims to study the relationship between R-loop structures and mutations that occur in tumours.

Researchers from the University of Debrecen and the Claude Bernard University (Lyon, France) have worked together for nearly ten years to develop a medication from an agent used to treat certain aggressive types of brain tumour.

This weekend the summer series of graduation ceremonies will begin at the University of Debrecen. In the weeks to come, about 4,000 graduates will receive their degrees. The first ceremonies will be held on 17 June, Friday, at 10 am and at 13 am, when students of the Faculty of Economics and Business will graduate at the Cour d’Honneur of the Main Building.

On Saturday, a ceremony was held in the Hall of the Main Building of the University of Debrecen, where research degrees and honorary titles were awarded. At the event 96 new doctors representing 5 areas of science received their degrees, and the Habilitation, Professor Emeritus, Civis honoris causa and Doctor honoris causa titles were also awarded.

Staff from the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology of the Faculty of Pharmacy of UD have visited the shooting in Oradea of a documentary series about the herbs of the areas around Oradea and Debrecen. The shooting will continue this summer in the Botanical Garden of the University of Debrecen.

The Ministry of Innovation and Technology and the Association of Hungarian PhD and DLA Candidates agreed on upgrading the support system of young researchers at the University of Debrecen. At the event the infrastructural development projects completed in the last 5 years to the value of HUF 8 billion were presented, and deputy state secretary Balázs Hankó talked about further opportunities.

This was the third, and final closing ceremony held by the University of Debrecen in the Nagyerdei Stadium. Saturday saw the farewells of graduates of the Faculty of Health, Dentistry, Child Education and Special Education, the Faculty of Pharmacy, Engineering and Public Health.

Six faculties of UD have requested the prolongation of the current academic year. This opportunity was opted for mostly in the programs of medicine and health sciences and technology and natural sciences. The examination period are planned almost everywhere to be conducted in-person.

Researchers at the Faculty of Pharmacy are working on creating antiviral compounds. The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry participates in developing medicines that can be used against the corona virus under the auspices of the National Virology Laboratory.
