A special professional day held for students at the Faculty of Pharmacy

Students enrolled in the MSc program in Drug Development Research Management at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Debrecen, recently participated in a comprehensive training program. Their interactive training began with a theoretical foundation, which was then continued with a practical session at a company based in Dunakeszi that provides, among other things, services in biotechnology and pharmaceutical research as well as analytics.

Ildikó Bácskay, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy (GYTK) at the University of Debrecen (UD), provided the following summary. During the course of the professional day, which was organized as part of the so-called preclinical internship, the theoretical knowledge acquired by MSc students in Drug Development Research Management at the university provided the knowledge base upon which their practical experiences could be built. During the preparatory lectures, students gained insight into the main steps of the early stages of drug development, with particular emphasis on the importance of preclinical trials. Subsequently, during the day spent at the internationally acclaimed company Aurigon Zrt. in Dunakeszi, this knowledge took the shape of a tangible, hands-on experience. The company’s experts first demonstrated how a new active ingredient is normally selected and tested, following which they also explained the requirements that must be met before entering the clinical phase.

This interactive program even gave students an opportunity to enhance their knowledge through asking questions and examining concrete examples. Some of the topics discussed were, for example, the importance of toxicological studies and the use of in vitro and in vivo models.

- All in all, this integrated theoretical and practical training has significantly contributed to our students’ professional development and helped them gain a more comprehensive understanding of the complex world of drug development- said Dean Ildikó Bácskay.

The students participating in the special program were shown around by Assistant Professor Zsolt Ráduly, a member of the Pharmaceutical Industry Ecosystem Center of UD.
