Silver Medal at the Junior World Championship

Blanka Nagy won second place in the Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships in Wuxi, China. The student of the Kossuth Lajos Secondary and Primary School of the University of Debrecen lost to Canada’s Julia Yin in the final after extremely close matches and collected the World Championship silver in addition to the Cadet World Championship that she had won two years earlier.

Bendegúz Serra’s student won two of her matches 15-14 and two 15-13 during the competition day and reached the top four. According to the results of the competition, Blanka Nagy defeated a Polish, a Romanian, an American, a Turkish, a Bulgarian and another Polish opponent on the way to the final. The Debrecen talent played her smoothest match in the world championship semi-final, when she won 15-8 against the Polish Tercjak. However, in the final, the Canadian fencer, Yin proved to be better by 15-12.

“Now I can be happy with this silver medal, because it was very hard to achieve this. The jet lag really bothered me, I couldn’t adapt properly, I struggled all day, and on top of that, I was one touch away from even making it to the top 32. I won the Cadet World Championship two years ago, now I have a silver, and I still have a junior season to go. So, I’m really satisfied, even though I unfortunately ran out of strength for the final”, said Blanka Nagy after the medal award ceremony.

The next big competition for the student, who is graduating from the secondary school of the University of Debrecen, will be the adult women’s epee World Cup, also held in Wuxi, after the secondary school final exams starting on 5 May. Then, she will have an opportunity to prove herself at the adult European Championships in Genoa in June and at the adult World Championships in Tbilisi in July.
