The Faculty of Computer Science Announces a Student AI Competition

The Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Debrecen is organizing a competition open to all students of the university with the aim of identifying student ideas and developments related to artificial intelligence, discovering talented teams, supporting students in gaining professional experience, and showcasing existing AI solutions. The competition, titled DEIK.AI Challenge 2026, is supported by the Innovation Ecosystem Center.

Students at the University of Debrecen can enter the competition individually or in teams of 2–4 members. The competition offers students the opportunity to work on real-world problems related to the university and the city, receive professional feedback, engage with the university’s innovation and startup ecosystem, gain opportunities to showcase their work internationally, and participate in projects carried out through research and development collaborations.

- One of the most important goals of the DEIK.AI Challenge is to engage students not only in general AI applications but also in real-world tasks that affect the younger generation, the university, the city, and, in a broader sense, the socio-economic environment. In solving such complex problems, the University of Debrecen’s diverse academic background provides a significant competitive advantage, as multidisciplinary solutions will become increasingly valuable in the future. State-of-the-art AI solutions can emerge from collaboration across the fields of computer science, natural sciences, healthcare, engineering, economics, agricultural sciences, and social sciences. “It is an important goal of ours to prepare the most promising student initiatives for participation in domestic and international innovation, professional, and startup events,” emphasized András Hajdu, dean of the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Debrecen.

Entries for the AI idea competition should be innovative concepts based on artificial intelligence that are expected to be marketable in the future. AI projects that are already operational or at an advanced stage of development are eligible for the AI demo competition. In addition to open AI solutions, key focus areas include urban environmental monitoring, the processing of environmental and mobility data, and the AI-based generation of PR and communications content.

The best demo projects will be invited to the two-day AI Sprint finals, where participants will work on specific development challenges. At this stage, the organizers will evaluate not only the technical potential of the project ideas and prototypes, but also individual performance, problem-solving skills, algorithmic thinking, creativity, and teamwork.

The application deadline for the AI Idea Competition is September 4, 2026, and the deadline for the AI Demo Competition is September 25; applicants may submit their materials in Hungarian or English. Applications must include a project description of no more than one page and a presentation video of no more than three minutes. Outstanding contestants will receive substantial cash prizes.
