Former Consul General of Hungary in Shanghai Levente Horváth gave a presentation titled “Chinese Geopolitical Notions” combined with a book launch on Thursday as part of the Confucius Institute’s Lectures on Chinese Culture course offered at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Debrecen (UD).

The University of Debrecen celebrated the beginning of the new academic year with a full-house event at the Nagyerdei Stadium on Wednesday. In addition to Hungarian stars, artists of the Institute of Pop Music and international students of the oDEon company also gave concerts. About 20,000 people attended the 6th year-opening stadium show of UD.

After two years, Erasmus students have arrived to the University of Debrecen again. The students involved in the mobility programme were received by representatives of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Student’s Council, the International Office, and the Erasmus Student Network in the Hall of the Main Building.

The Confucius Institute of the Faculty of Humanities of UD celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival with an exhibition of Chinese artworks. Tea ceremony and traditional mooncake awaited visitors at the event, where new teachers of the Institute were also introduced.

The number of foreign students at the University of Debrecen continues to grow. In September, more than two thousand students will begin their studies on the university’s English language courses. In the academic year 2022/23, it is expected that more than 7,200 people, more than a fifth of the foreign students studying in Hungary, will be studying at the University of Debrecen.

Saturday evening, the newly formed Zoltán Kodály World Youth Orchestra, conducted by Tamás Vásáry, gave a very successful concert at Kölcsey Center as the closing act of the 21st Young Musicians’ Summer Academy. About 200 young people from nineteen countries participated in this year’s event of the Faculty of Music.

As a result of the general admission procedure, a total of 6,502 first-year students can start their studies from September in the Hungarian-language programmes of the University of Debrecen. The number of students admitted in 2022, including additional admissions, students from abroad, as well as those admitted to the English-language courses, is expected to reach 10,000 by September.

The athletes of the University of Debrecen are already in Poland, at the venue of the European University Games. In the following days, UD's futsal players, water polo players, tennis players and jugglers will compete in Lódz.

The eight pilots – from Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Hungary, Mongolia, Turkey and Ukraine - who were the first in the history of the University of Debrecen and the faculty to graduate after completing the "Professional pilot" training, received their diplomas at the ceremony of the Technical Faculty of the University of Debrecen.

Graduates from the program in medicine took their oath on Friday at the University of Debrecen. Having completed their course of studies either in Hungarian or in English, more than a hundred and twenty of them received their diplomas at the ceremonial convocation of the Faculty of Medicine.

This weekend the summer series of graduation ceremonies will begin at the University of Debrecen. In the weeks to come, about 4,000 graduates will receive their degrees. The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen released the first Chinese students who completed the Hungarian-language BA course in Hungarian language and literature at the speech day event held in the Main Building of UD on Friday. The 12 Chinese graduates started their studies in Debrecen three years ago within the framework of an international educational programme.

Students of the University of Debrecen have worked as volunteers at the border crossing at Biharkeresztes for over two months. So far they have facilitated aliens policing procedures through providing translation services for the police in about 600 cases.

The organising committee responsible for the events of the 2024 European University Games (EUG) that will take place in Debrecen held its meeting in Mád. At the event specific organisational tasks and their owners were identified, and the preparation of the feasibility study began. The Games will be preceded by high-level international competitions at the University of Debrecen next year.

A special research and education oriented organizational unit has been established by NI Hungary at the Faculty of Informatics of the University of Debrecen in order to assist students enrolled in Computer Science, Business Informatics and Computer Science Engineering BSc and MSc programs. In addition, the US-based company has also supported the installment of a new computer laboratory through a donation worth more than 4 million HUF.

The Faculty of Informatics of the University of Debrecen has established a special research and education oriented organizational unit with the Hungarian subsidiary of one of the fastest-growing software engineering companies in the world, EPAM Systems Inc. The objective of the relevant agreement is to facilitate the integration of international market expertise and up-to-date technological knowledge into the channels of education.

Everyone visiting the 15th International Food Day on Friday was offered a wide variety of African, Asian, and American foods and flavors, not to mention the insight they could get into these cultures. Not only the international students of the University, but a number of Debrecen inhabitants were also eager to join this gastro festival.

The audience gave a standing ovation to the international students of the University of Debrecen who performed the musical Hair at UD’s theatre at the Böszörményi Street on Saturday evening. At the event a new 60sqm LED wall was also introduced, which complemented the theatrical experience with spectacular visual content.

Avram Hershko, a world famous chemist from Israel has received this year’s University of Debrecen Science Impact Award (uDEsia) at UD. The Nobel laureate researcher received the university’s highest scientific award from László Csernoch, vice rector for scientific affairs.

Students who are currently enrolled in the English-language programs offered by the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) were given presentations at an event organized by the International Student Union (ISU) on the academic work conducted at the FST, the possibilities for getting involved in TDK (Student Scientific Conference) and on the talent management programs conducted by the university.

The new software in the equipment pool of the Faculty of Informatics at the University of Debrecen is routinely used in research and development related to autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence. The special piece of equipment inaugurated on Thursday will assist the vehicle research activities of the institution, which are of strategic significance.
