- On one of the most decisive days of your lives, we are happy to share in your festive joy. When we welcome you as doctors and colleagues after you have taken your oath, I suggest that your first thought should be one of gratitude: gratitude to all those who have helped you become doctors. First and foremost, to your parents, friends, supporters, classmates, and, last but not least, to your teachers. I do hope that you have managed to come across true teachers: ones from whom you have received not only professional knowledge but also lessons in humanity- said László Mátyus, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, in his ceremonial address.
The dean of the faculty underlined that the recent graduates have earned their medical degrees at the medical school of one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Hungary, which has displayed its excellence even by European standards. While the University of Debrecen has long been an example of stability and steady progress, it has always been open to new ideas. While preserving the values of medical education, it remains ready for further development.
- You have chosen a beautiful vocation, which aims to help people who are suffering. Is it possible to pick goal any nobler than this? As you head out on this path, let me give you some encouragement by stating that you possess the modern knowledge that will enable you to meet the high expectations physicians need to face. At the same time, even on this festive occasion, I must remind you that meeting these expectations will require constant learning and self-improvement. Always remember that, although the duty of a physician’s is to heal others, unfortunately, this is not always possible. Our current medical activities are oftentimes limited to alleviating the suffering of those in pain. However, we must never forget about our human duty, which is to provide spiritual support for those who turn to us- said Professor László Mátyus.
After listening to the dean’s solemn words, the Hungarian and international graduating students took their medical oaths.
- We, the Vice Rector of the University of Debrecen and the members of the Senate, by virtue of the authority vested in our office, hereby confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Medicine as a reward for your studies completed and endow you with all the rights and privileges to which doctors of medicine are entitled by law- said Professor Dénes Páll, Vice Rector for General Affairs at the University of Debrecen.
