The building of the new Learning Center is going to be available for use by the students of the University of Debrecen as of Monday. The multifunctional, state-of-the-art, triangular building, situated between the Main Building of the university and the sports facilities of DEAC [Debreceni Egyetemi Atlétikai Club – UD Athletic Club] next to Dóczy utca, is primarily meant to host and facilitate individual and group-based learning activities.

Both Magyar Celluláris Képalkotó [Cellular Imaging Hungary], established through the coordinating activity of the University of Debrecen, and Magyar Orvosi és Preklinikai Képalkotó Laboratórium [Medical and Preclinical Imaging Hungary] have been recognized recently as locations for the most outstanding research infrasructure in Hungary. Each of these two laboratories are accredited members of the Euro-BioImaging ERIC [European Research Infrastructure Consortium].

As a participant in a 26-member European consortium, the University of Debrecen has become one of the winners of the HORIZON-INFRA-2021 tender. The NMR Instrument Center of the Institute of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science and Technology is to join an international network formed to solve problems related to material structure, chemistry and biology.

Members of an official delegation from Kazakhstan, representing the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (Almaty, Kazakhstan), have visited the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Debrecen in order to learn about research conducted here in the fields of biology, botany, genomics and microbiology.

Liu Shaoang, a Sports Manager major at the University of Debrecen, has made history in the 500-meter short track speed skating final event at the Winter Olympic Games held in Beijing. The start-to-finish victory of the 23-year-old athlete meant the first gold medal for Hungary in the history of the Winter Olympic Games.

Nobel Prize-winning American scientist and pharmacologist Louis Joseph Ignarro, professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, who shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in medicine for his discovery of the physiological effects of nitric oxide, as well as members of the Nobel Prize Committee, professors from renowned foreign universities, Hungarian academicians, university professors, the former rector of the University of Debrecen and a number of internationally renowned experts have accepted the invitation to become members of the Scientific and Social Advisory Board established for the further development of the University of Debrecen.

The Proteomics Core Facility of the University of Debrecen, which primarily focuses on studying proteins, has been recognised as one of the best research facilities in Hungary. The compilation of the list that contains the best 50 Hungarian research facilities was initiated by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office.

Katalin Karikó has offered the entire amount that she received along with the Debrecen Award for Molecular Medicine for research programmes carried out at the University of Debrecen and for talent management. The Hungarian research biologist, who patented the synthetic mRNA-based vaccine technology, received the prize in December.

The network made up of research units of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen is the only cluster that has made it to the TOP50 list of research infrastructures in the field of agricultural and food sciences, compiled by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office.

In the framework of a multi-year project, researchers of the Laboratory of Biomechanics of the University of Debrecen have developed trial implants of a joint endoprosthesis using tissue-friendly titanium alloy, 3D printing technology, and a new type of fastening principle. The new solutions are expected to appear in clinical practice soon.

Several of the research facilities of the University of Debrecen appear on the list of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, which contains the best 50 Hungarian research laboratories.

The University of Debrecen is still listed among the best 40 higher education institutions in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Region ranking of the QS World University Rankings. In addition, UD has jumped to place 204th in the Green Metric sustainability ranking.

This year the Debrecen Award for Molecular Medicine went to Katalin Karikó. The Hungarian Széchenyi laureate research biologist, who patented the synthetic mRNS-based vaccine technology, received the prize at a ceremony held at the University of Debrecen on Tuesday. She also gave a presentation to the audience.

At its meeting held on 9 December 2021, the Senate of the University of Debrecen made a decision regarding the preferred candidate for the position of Rector. The Senate recommended the appointment of Zoltán Szilvássy as Rector by the Board of Trustees of the foundation maintaining the university. The Senate also made decisions about the launch of new courses, business partnerships, and the amendment of several regulations.
