With the principal focus on the development of public transportation and urban mobility in Debrecen, there were as many as 37 teams competing for a spot in the finals on Wednesday and Thursday, May 20 and 21, participating in a two-day idea competition hosted jointly by Debrecen’s public transport company, DKV Debreceni Közlekedési Zrt., and the Innovation Ecosystem Center of the University of Debrecen.

The now-traditional international student conference hosted by the Faculty of Science and Technology (TTK) at the University of Debrecen covered a wide range of exciting topics from drone wing technology to the urban heat island effect and nanotechnology. The event’s goal is to promote research and foster scientific collaboration among the faculty’s extremely diverse community, which brings together more than a hundred nationalities.
With almost 6,500 visitors, this year’s International Food Day saw record-breaking attendance. The exceptionally well-received event was organized by the Student Union of the University of Debrecen and the International Student Union (ISU) which represents the foreign students at the university. This year, as many as 36 nations’ specialties were available for attendees to taste at the northern event area of the Nagyerdei Stadium, along with the performances of young musical talents and bands of the international student community who entertained the guests until dawn.
Nine PhD students from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Debrecen visited China Pharmaceutical University in Nanjing, a city with a population of over 9 million. The primary goal of the trip was to deepen professional and scientific cooperation between the two institutions.
There were as many as sixteen teams containing fifty students altogether on Wednesday and Thursday, February 25 and 26, at the first Re:Shape the City idea generation contest held at the University of Debrecen, aiming to find new solutions to challenges posed by a modern city.
Students of the University of Debrecen did pretty well at this year’s NeuroSpark Hackathon held in Elche, Spain. Our contestants, representing the Faculty of Economics and Business, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Informatics, competed as members of international teams focusing on potential solutions of problems related to the nervous system and managed to achieve significant results.
The number of foreign students at the University of Debrecen has continued to grow, with almost 7,800 students studying at UD in the 2025/2026 academic year. Attila Jenei, Director of the Coordinating Center for International Education, advocates the continuous development of the English-language training system to maintain the popularity of the institution in the international student market and to increase competitiveness.
On Orientation Day, foreign students at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Debrecen had the opportunity to learn about Hungarian and Debrecen customs and culture on Wednesday. Presentations were given in English at the event, followed by informal discussions among the participants. Every year, more and more native Hungarian speakers study courses in English at the Faculty of Economics.
A special cultural event titled Nations on Stage was held at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Debrecen on Tuesday. Foreign students performed music and dance exhibitions and presented their countries on stands. The dean of the faculty also took to the stage, with a band playing Hungarian folk music.
A special hand-woven silk carpet depicting the University of Debrecen was donated to the university by the Iranian Rouzbeh Scientific Institute, with which the university has maintained a partnership for over thirty-five years. The personal gift was received by Rector Zoltán Szilvássy and Attila Jenei, Director of the Coordinating Center for International Education, in a ceremonial setting. The gesture is a worthy symbol of the committed and successful cooperation between the two institutions.
