“As quite a few of you might have already experienced during the short time you have spent here in Debrecen, our university and our city go hand in hand. Through our initiative, we would wish to provide you with information that can make the rest of your time with us more successful, more enjoyable and happier. In addition to your academic efforts, we would like you to have other unforgettable experiences during your stay in Debrecen,” said László Stündl, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen, at the opening ceremony of the event.
Debrecen’s Deputy Mayor István Puskás was also present to welcome the international students.
“During my undergraduate and graduate years at the University of Debrecen and abroad, I had a chance to experience how important it is for the international student community to have the extra information that you can now get here as a package. The Municipality of Debrecen is happy to support Orientation Day, as we really want to show you the cultural diversity that our city represents. Most recently, for example, the US actor Tim Robbins and his company visited Csokonai National Theatre in Debrecen. We aim to offer as many international activities as possible to further promote our city where the members of the international student community of the university are always welcome,” said István Puskás.
Vice Dean for International Affairs of the Faculty of Economics and Business László Erdey, in his student briefing, identified respect, tolerance and acceptance as the most important factors for the successful integration of international students.
“We regard these students as our partners. We want them to be aware of the advantage that they can count on us, because we are always there to help them in everything they need. Our international students often collect information from each other but we encourage them to feel free to contact us, the teaching staff, with questions not only about their studies, but also about their academic interests and future career prospects. We suggest that they rather use the comprehensive information system provided by the university, the main element of which is the Studiversity app, check the website of the International Education Coordination Center and, of course, specifically the faculty website and the social media platforms of the faculties and the university, and contact the International Student Union (ISU), the sub-group of the UD’s Student Self-Government,” said László Erdey.
At the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management, almost 250 international freshers started their bachelor’s, master’s and PhD studies this past September.
On O-day, students also had the opportunity to get to know the individual university communities, the services of the UD’s University and National Library, the scholarships coordinated by the International Office, the center called MAG Praktikum offering dual training places, the sports facilities provided by DEAC and UniFit, and our city's cultural institutions, including Csokonai National Theatre and MODEM.
