The Times Higher Education (THE) most recent Impact Rankings measure global universities’ success in delivering the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-s) in as many as 17 categories concerning the social and economic roles and responsibilities born by these institutions of higher education as well as their effects. The University of Debrecen (UD) has been ranked in 6 of these categories.
UD has been ranked 201-300 in the categories Partnership for Goals and Decent Work and Economic Growth, which is the best score among Hungarian universities. In the former of these two categories, it has managed to retain its position achieved last year as the best Hungarian institution, while in the latter, it has been listed for the first time. Its position is similar (201-300) in the categories Sustainable cities and communities and Life below water, while in the category Good health and wellbeing, it is ranked 401-600 and, in the category Quality education, it is ranked 301-400.
In the category Partnership for Goals, the publishers of the Impact Rankings list considered the educational, research and social responsibility activities related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, while in the category Life below water, the final score was measured and given on the basis of research activities connected to the topic as well as educational and academic activities connected to water-based ecosystems, minimizing waste and sewage disposal in bodies of water and sustaining local water ecosystems.
In the methodology for Good health and wellbeing, the indicators considered included the number of students enrolled in health programs, their proportion of the total number of students, health-related research, industrial cooperation and the infrastructure related to leading a healthy lifestyle. The ranking according to Quality education focused on the universities’ contribution to and research on early years and lifelong learning as well as the proportion of those acquiring a degree in teacher training and the first-generation intellectuals among the students.
The ranking assessing Decent work and economic growth, primarily considered factors such as the institutions’ economic research, their employment practices and the share of students taking work placements.
For evaluating the aspect of Sustainable cities and communities, the most important factors included the institutions’ research on sustainability and their role as custodians of art and heritage, including their efforts to provide access to them for the local communities as well as their internal approaches to sustainability.
The 2022 overall rankings of THE is led by Western Sydney University, Australia, the second place goes to Arizona State University (Tempe, USA), and the third place goes to Western University, Canada.
Out of Hungarian institutions of higher education, the list of the British organization also includes Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem, Budapest, Szegedi Tudományegyetem and Pécsi Tudományegyetem in addition to the University of Debrecen.
