Commissioned by European University Sports Association (EUSA), the next European University Games (EUG) between July 12 and 24, 2024, will be hosted jointly by Hungarian University and College Sports Association (Magyar Egyetemi-Főiskolai Sportszövetség - MEFS), the University of Debrecen, the University of Miskolc, National Event Management Agency, the City of Debrecen and the City of Miskolc. More than 5,000 participants from as many as 400 universities in 40 countries are expected to participate in this multi-sport event, which will feature competitions in 17 branches and divisions of sport in the two cities.

The Summer European University Games (EUG) could set a new record for the number of entries. The first phase of registration is now closed and preliminary entries suggest that the 2024 event could be the biggest and most popular EUG ever. The University of Debrecen is also preparing a number of sports programmes ahead of the event, which starts on 12 July.

The European University Games (EUG), jointly organised this summer by the University of Debrecen and the University of Miskolc, will be a highlight at the largest Hungarian education exhibition. It was announced at the trade fair, which opened on Thursday at Hungexpo, that the organisers are now inviting applications for volunteer helpers for the July multi-sport event.

The Supervisory Board of the European University Sports Association (EUSA) has visited the University of Debrecen in connection with the organization of the upcoming European Universities Games (EUG). 228 days are left until the Games of next summer. The organizers have finalized the sports programmes, the number of competitors and will soon expect entries.

On Tuesday evening, students and employees of the University of Debrecen had a chance to view a portrait film in the university theatre hall about the career of the legendary youth coach of Real Madrid, József Tóth-Zele. The premiere, which was combined with a Q&A session with the audience, was also attended by the 88-year-old title character and the producer of the film, Ambassador Barnabás Kovács.

Participants in Hungary’s largest sports conference could get acquainted with the sports ecosystem of the University of Debrecen, which is unique in Hungary, as well as with its extensive sports science trainings and innovations. The experts of our Sports Science Coordination Institute prepared several presentations for this event and even a stand as the only higher education institution to display information there.

Two excellent tennis players of the University of Debrecen, Kinga Bágyi, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry and László Orosz, Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Surgery of the Faculty of General Medicine, returned home with a total of four gold medals from the 52nd World Medical Tennis Championships in Jurmala, Latvia.

With their teams defending their titles, Ukrainian and Lithuanian universities dominated the 3X3 Basketball Championship in Debrecen. Out of the Hungarian groups, UD teams achieved the best results. The women’s and the men’s teams finished on the 6th and on the 12th places, respectively.

There will be representatives of universities from as many as 17 European nations, competing in 40 teams and totaling almost 400 participants present at the European Universities 3x3 Basketball Championship starting in about three weeks at the University of Debrecen. The defending champions are also coming, so the quality and the unique atmosphere will be guaranteed in and around the courts to be set up in front of the Main Building.

The University of Debrecen is taking over the costs of the two Ukrainian teams that have entered for the European 3x3 University Basketball Championship, thereby supporting the athletes of the war-torn country. Between July 15 and 19, forty teams will compete in front of the Main building of the university.

The delegation of the European University Sports Association (EUSA) arrived in Hungary last Friday for a two-day official visit. After Friday's briefing in Budapest, delegates visited the venues of next year's European University Games (EUG) in Miskolc and Debrecen on Saturday, paying special attention to Egyetem tér [University Square], which will function as the location for the 3x3 basketball tournament and also the European University Championships (EUC) between 15 and 19 July this year.

A basketball court designed and constructed for the European Universities 3×3 Basketball Championships was tested by students of the University of Debrecen on Tuesday on the square in front of the Main Building. This summer’s continental competition will be conducted with the participation of almost 50 teams from as many as 40 different universities in Europe.

The city of Debrecen will be hosting the most important Hungarian university multi-sport event of this year between April 28 and May 1. In the framework of an unforgettable festivity, more than 600 athletes are expected to compete for victory in the finals of Hungarian University-College National Championship.

New expanded wings, classrooms, offices and exhibition areas have been added to the old grandstand of DEAC, which was originally built in 1928. At the inauguration ceremony of the new facility, Minister of State for Sport Ádám Schmidt spoke with appreciation of the overall sports concept implemented by the University of Debrecen.

Our Sports Science Coordination Institute is in the process of recruiting volunteers to help in hosting top-priority sports events to be held at the University of Debrecen. Young people planning to enroll in our institution in 2024 can earn extra points for this kind of activity. An information package about the relevant details was presented in the recently inaugurated Learning Center.

At a round table discussion hosted by the Faculty of Economics of the University of Debrecen for master’s students in sports economics, Yacov Hadas-Handelsman talked about iconic Olympian athletes, the technological achievements and economic implications of sport, as well as the importance of sports diplomacy.

The European University Sports Association (EUSA) delegation visited the planned venues of next year's 3x3 European University Basketball Championship (EUC) and the 2024 European University Games (EUG) at the University of Debrecen. The members of the delegation mainly visited the sports venues and the units catering for the events.

There will be three major sport events at UD next year. One of the most popular universities in Hungary will host prestigious international competitions.

Luca Kozák, student of finance and accounting at UD came in second in the 100 m hurdles at the European Athletic Championship, which was organised in the framework of the multisport EC. She is the first Hungarian athlete to make it to the final in this event.

The athletes of the University of Debrecen are already in Poland, at the venue of the European University Games. In the following days, UD's futsal players, water polo players, tennis players and jugglers will compete in Lódz.

As the organisers of the next European University Games, the University of Debrecen and the University of Miskolc will be represented at this year’s EUG, which will be held in Poland in July. Representatives of the two universities have discussed organisational details at UD.

The organising committee responsible for the events of the 2024 European University Games (EUG) that will take place in Debrecen held its meeting in Mád. At the event specific organisational tasks and their owners were identified, and the preparation of the feasibility study began. The Games will be preceded by high-level international competitions at the University of Debrecen next year.

Liu Shaoang, who studies sports management at the Faculty of Economics and Business of UD, won four gold medals at the short-track speed skating world championship in Montreal. The 24-year-old athlete of Ferencváros won the 500m, the 1500m and the 1000m races, and defended his overall title.

Visitors of the Puskás Day, organised at the Hungarian Pavilion of the Dubai World Expo, were able to familiarize themselves with the innovative sports strategy and sports infrastructural and sport economic developments of the University of Debrecen, and with the organisational structure, operational model and achievements of DEAC.

Liu Shaoang, a Sports Manager major at the University of Debrecen, has made history in the 500-meter short track speed skating final event at the Winter Olympic Games held in Beijing. The start-to-finish victory of the 23-year-old athlete meant the first gold medal for Hungary in the history of the Winter Olympic Games.
