Representatives of the University of Debrecen and Mansoura University (Egypt) have signed an agreement in the field of agricultural education programs. The agreement was signed recently in Cairo in the presence of Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and János Csák, Hungarian Minister of Culture and Innovation.

Researchers at the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management and the UD Agricultural Research Institutes and Agricultural Economics are working on the monitoring of agricultural and hydrological drought trends and the development of a monitoring and forecasting system. The results could help develop effective drought mitigation plans. Details of the research have been published in the prestigious scientific journal Computers and Electronics in Agriculture.

Beijing University of Agriculture and the University of Debrecen continue to broaden the basics of their cooperation. These two institutions have been working together in the field of biological plant protection and pest management for more than two decades, and their joint research and education activities will soon be extended to additional academic fields. The relevant agreement was signed on Thursday by the leaders of the two universities in Debrecen.

Aurelia Giacometto Skipwith, former director of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, visited the University of Debrecen to discuss agricultural research and training, as well as ways to increase the number of American students. He also gave a lecture to students of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management.

Researchers at the University of Debrecen have developed several new methods in order to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases including and similar to ammonia and methane produced on livestock farms. As it was revealed on Thursday at the institution's Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management (DE MÉK), the practical introduction and application of these methods is to be supported by the Hungarian state.

In the framework of the HUNOR - Hungarian Astronaut Program, researchers from the University of Debrecen are working on the development of systems for food production in long-duration space missions. Experts from the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management are working with indigenous, home-bred pepper varieties to enable astronauts to grow and eat fresh, juicy and crunchy vegetables with zero emission during space missions.

Plant memory and its potential to be exploited, salinization affecting the agro-ecosystem and the food safety implications of metal contamination were among the topics discussed at an international conference on sustainable and innovative solutions for agriculture and food industry at the University of Debrecen. The conference, organised for the first time by the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management, was attended by more than 100 experts and focused on the theme "One Health".

The specialists of the University of Debrecen were seeking solutions to the animal health and feeding difficulties of the sheep industry in the more than three-year long international project that has just come to an end, attended by ten universities and research institutes from eight countries. The results of the EuroSheep program with Hungarian relevance were presented on Thursday.

Researchers presented the latest scientific results of the Horizon 2020-InnoVar project to support the efficiency of European plant cultivation and variety certification, at the Department of the Nyíregyháza Research Institute of the University of Debrecen's Agricultural Research Institutes and Teaching Institutions. Within the framework of Erasmus+, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen (MÉK - Mezőgazdaság-, Élelmiszertudományi és Környezetgazdálkodási Kar) has launched an innovative program development project related to the precision agricultural engineering program. The aim of this three-year project is to design and develop a two-semester MSc program. The results achieved so far were presented on Wednesday at the Böszörményi úti campus of UD.

The researchers of the University of Debrecen presented the latest knowledge and research results related to the feeding of ewes, abortions occurring in sheep farms and ketosis in sheep at the domestic workshop of the EuroSheep project. The international program aims to develop the sheep industry in eight European countries.

For the first time in the world, researchers at the Center for Agricultural Genomics and Biotechnology of the University of Debrecen use DNA chip technology in the genetic testing of domestic pigeons. The new analytical method helps the genetic uptake of the species significantly. The findings of the research project were recently published in the periodical Saudi Journal of Biological Sciences.

Blue and oxeye tits, long-tail tits and larks, as well as some greenfinches and woodpeckers, received uniquely coded IDs on the University Square campus on Tuesday. The traditional bird ringing event was extremely popular not only among conservation engineering students of the Faculty of Agriculture, but also among foreign students.

In the framework of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology, researchers of the Centre for Agricultural Genomics and Biotechnology have studied the molecular background of plants’ memory. The findings have been published in Trends in Plant Science, the most prestigious journal in the field.

The University of Debrecen and the South Dakota State University have concluded an agreement for the purposes of the expansion of educational and research relations and the promotion of international cooperation. The partnership agreement was signed at Brookings by Endre Harsányi, the vice chancellor responsible for the development of agricultural and food science.

Without plant protection, there is no efficient agriculture, as we learned at the 27th Eastern Hungarian Plant Protection Forum. The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen and the Faculty of Animal Sciences of the Indonesian Gadjah Mada University have signed an agreement on cooperation in education and research and on furthering the international relations of the two institutions. According to the agreement, a scientific exchange programme will be launched jointly by the two universities.

“Space peppers” grown by the University of Debrecen (UD) in the space capsule Capsitron, on display at the exhibition Álmok Álmodói 20, have been harvested recently. The closed crop production ecosystem used in the research project DE SPACE has indeed produced delectable and crunchy vegetables. In fact, experts from UD participating in the project have studied several pepper species with the aim of selecting the ones that promised the largest yield in the smallest area with zero emission.

The network made up of research units of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen is the only cluster that has made it to the TOP50 list of research infrastructures in the field of agricultural and food sciences, compiled by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office.

Several of the research facilities of the University of Debrecen appear on the list of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, which contains the best 50 Hungarian research laboratories.
