New steps taken in the cooperation with Beijing University of Agriculture

Beijing University of Agriculture and the University of Debrecen continue to broaden the basics of their cooperation. These two institutions have been working together in the field of biological plant protection and pest management for more than two decades, and their joint research and education activities will soon be extended to additional academic fields. The relevant agreement was signed on Thursday by the leaders of the two universities in Debrecen.

Researchers of agriculture from Debrecen and their counterparts from Beijing University of Agriculture (BUA) have been involved in cooperation since 1998 within the framework of bilateral scientific and technological (S&T) tenders. The focus of their research is on biological pest management of woody plants, the model plant of which is chestnut, but it can be extended to forest plants in addition to fruit bearing trees.
In order to continue the joint work in this field, the present stage of which will end in December this year, the two institutions have agreed to broaden the field of cooperation, and the corresponding letter of intent was signed by Rector Zoltán Szilvássy and Zhao Feng, President of the University Council of BUA on November 9.
On this occasion, the leaders of the two universities and the experts of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management discussed and reviewed the challenges facing agriculture in the two countries as well as the research directions and scientific endeavors aimed at solving them, together with the potential points of departure for cooperation. 

It was concluded at the meeting that, through the complex research activities of Debrecen’s Faculty of Agriculture, several joint programs can be launched in the fields of crop production, horticulture, animal husbandry, precision agriculture, food science and technology, and environmental science. The representatives of the Chinese university also indicated their keen interest in the medical research and health industry efforts of the University of Debrecen.  

The delegation of Beijing University of Agriculture also met with the heads of institutes within the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management, who presented their educational and research portfolio in detail, following which the Chinese guests visited the research institutes of our university in Újfehértó and Nyíregyháza.
