Occasionally, there might be cases when you even have to take an Olympic champion by the hand in order to help them muster enough courage to just sit for an exam. Apart from providing study organization assistance and advice, this sort of personal motivation is the “secret” of the mentoring program offered by the University of Debrecen. It cannot simply be by chance that more than a hundred top athletes have already graduated from UD without having to make a choice between sport and study.

Special guests arrived at the opening ceremony of the academic year of the University of Debrecen on Sunday: the "Wind Brothers" have fond memories of the Főnix Arena, as they have won several gold medals at the facility, but this time they did not receive a medal, but a degree. The Liu brothers, Olympic, World and European short track speed skating champions, received their degrees at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, where they were officially handed over their diplomas.
The University of Debrecen was the first and so far the only one in Hungary to achieve the highest platinum grade in the FISU Healthy Campus rating system. UD is currently one of only 38 institutions in the world with the highest rating in the area of quality of life and lifestyle on campus.
Nearly five thousand participants from four hundred and twenty-eight universities in thirty-seven countries attended the 2024 European University Games, organized by Debrecen-Miskolc. The events at both venues were characterized by unforgettable experiences, exciting matches and a wonderful atmosphere.
With athletes and referees taking their oaths and with the hoist of the flag of the European University Sports Association (EUSA), the European Universities Games officially began. About a thousand participants travelled with police escort from Debrecen to Miskolc where the grand opening ceremony was held.
The biggest ever Hungarian delegation will take part in the European University Games in Debrecen and Miskolc. Almost seven hundred athletes and officials from as many as twenty-two Hungarian institutions of higher education have registered for this multi-sport world event, which will attract more than five thousand participants altogether. The official mascot of the summer EUG, a playful lynx, has also been “unveiled.”
The citizens of Miskolc and Debrecen are excited about the challenge ahead as they will soon be hosting the European University Games, Europe's biggest university sporting event.
Debreceni Egyetem Sporttudományi Koordinációs Intézete (DESKI) [Sports Science Coordination Institute of the University of Debrecen] has also joined the campaign "Move TOGETHER Debrecen – 10 days of physical exercising" (Mozdulj EGYÜTT Debrecen – 10 nap a mozgás jegyében). The sports programs included a FIBA 3x3 basketball tournament as well as a Frisbee and rugby demonstration, while UniFit also held an open day. This campaign is routinely meant to raise awareness of the importance of regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
The University of Debrecen is the only Hungarian institution of higher education to have received the gold certification of the FISU Healthy Campus program. Out of a total of 137 institutions of higher education on the international list, only ten have achieved a similar rating.
The University of Debrecen aims to organize a safe and memorable competition, and will host the delegations of the European University Games (EUG) in July in compliance with all international rules and in decent conditions, the organizing committee said at its latest professional meeting.
