A new type of fluorine-containing compounds chemically related to antitumour and antiviral agents, produced at the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Pharmacy, could play a role in the treatment of many serious diseases in the future. The scientific article on this topic was selected as one of the flagship publications of January by the Department of Chemical Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

One of the most significant scientific achievements of recent years is the recommendation of researchers from the University of Debrecen in one of the world's leading oncology journals, Nature Reviews Clinical Oncolgy. Based on their research results, researchers of the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Biology of the Faculty of General Medicine have formulated a recommendation for clinicians on the composition of cell therapy products to be used in organ tumours for more successful treatments.

Leading members of CARPE (Consortium on Applied Research and Professional Education) met in Brussels over the weekend. Representing the University of Debrecen, Deputy Rector for Research and Education László Csernoch and Scientific Director Zsolt Varga attended the meeting.

The Károly Ihrig Doctoral School of Management and Business of the University of Debrecen has held an international conference of PhD students, sponsored by the university’s Faculty of Economics and Hungary’s Central Bank. Hungarian and foreign students delivered presentations in ten sessions. Gergely Baksay, Managing Director responsible for economic and budget analysis of the Central Bank gave a plenary presentation. The programme included a round table discussion too.

Researchers at the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management and the UD Agricultural Research Institutes and Agricultural Economics are working on the monitoring of agricultural and hydrological drought trends and the development of a monitoring and forecasting system. The results could help develop effective drought mitigation plans. Details of the research have been published in the prestigious scientific journal Computers and Electronics in Agriculture.

The University of Debrecen has made a cooperation agreement with six Vietnamese universities in the fields of information technology, pharmacy, and medicine. The framework agreements were signed by Zoltán Szilvássy, Rector of Debrecen University, in the presence of Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Minister of Defence, on Friday, at the National University of Public Service.

Dental fillings and adhesives, including special bulk-fill composites, have been investigated by manufacturers in a recently completed research project at the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Dentistry. The work of the research team was recognised by the publication award of the Gróf Tisza István Foundation for the University of Debrecen.

Researchers at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Debrecen have developed a prototype of an environment-friendly, high-performance, rechargeable zinc-air battery. This new type of energy store is based on cellulose and uses biodegradable materials as additives and membranes. Its development is in the scale-up phase.

Regő Baráth Benjámin reported on the results of his research on human placental macrophages at the 12th Annual JHAC Research Symposium at the Johns Hopkins University All Children's Hospital in the United States. The sixth-year medical student was the youngest speaker at the congress.

Beijing University of Agriculture and the University of Debrecen continue to broaden the basics of their cooperation. These two institutions have been working together in the field of biological plant protection and pest management for more than two decades, and their joint research and education activities will soon be extended to additional academic fields. The relevant agreement was signed on Thursday by the leaders of the two universities in Debrecen.
