The faculty and students of the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Engineering recently visited CERN, the world's largest particle physics laboratory. Members of the delegation were not only introduced to the latest results in physics, but also discussed long-term research cooperation between the faculty and the organisation running the facility.

A world-class electronic manufacturing technology laboratory has been set up at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Debrecen. The laboratory installed at the Department of Electrical Engineering through a cooperation between UD and its partner companies offers an industrial environment where students can become familiar with cutting-edge manufacturing technologies.

State-of-the-art facilities and equipment are available for a variety of materials science examinations, structural analysis and the production of samples in Debreceni Egyetem – Atommagkutató Intézet Anyagtudományi Kutatóhálózat [Materials Science Research Network of the Institute for Nuclear Research and the University of Debrecen]. The National Research, Development and Innovation Office has recently awarded the title “Top 50 Kutatási Infrastruktúra” [Top 50 Research Infrastructure] to this unique network of laboratories.

Students of the UD, who took part in the nuclear energy competition, known as Hackatom organised by Rosatom Central-Europe, Paks Nuclear Power Plant Ltd. along with Paks II. Ltd, this spring, had the chance to get acquainted with Unit 4 of Paks Nuclear Power Plant on the spot.

The Eleventh International Conference on Diffusion in Materials (DIMAT) was organized by the Department of Solid State Physics of the University of Debrecen. The most important conference on diffusion physics was organized again in Hungary after more than thirty years.

Teams from the University of Debrecen took the first six prizes at the joint Russian-Hungarian online competition hosted by Rosatom Central Europe, Paks Nuclear Power Plant of MVM Group and Paks II. Zrt. The awards ceremony of Hackatom was held on Friday in the Aula venue of the UD.

Support-free mesoporous gold nanoparticles have been synthesized through a unique process developed by the researchers of the University of Debrecen. A report on this particular research project was published on the front cover of Nanomaterials, the prestigious journal of material science.

From now on, electrical engineering students at UD will be able to learn how to use programmable logic controllers (PLCs) in an industrial environment. In connection with the new lab, representatives of companies operating in the region discussed opportunities for cooperation with the faculty.

Researchers at the University of Debrecen have succeeded in transforming extremely thin films of metal into a special alloy. The article on the new discovery and its relevant research background has been published in one of the top ten periodicals on materials science, Progress in Materials Science.

Physicists of the University of Debrecen also participated in the international research that succeeded in measuring the strength of the interaction between the two heaviest known particles, the Higgs boson and the t-quark.

Researchers from the Institute of Physics of the University of Debrecen were working on improving the precision and efficiency of medical accelerators at athe medical technology hackathon in Geneva.

By establishing the External Department of Power System Engineering and updating the equipment of the measuring lab, the University of Debrecen and E.ON are strengthening their cooperation, which also includes dual education. The parties signed the agreement on Monday.

In the framework of the International Particle Physics Student Workshop 60 students learned about the research programmes of CERN and the basics of particle physics at the Institute of Physics of the University of Debrecen.
