On the Sunday News radio programme Zoltán Szilvássy, Rector of the University of Debrecen spoke about the economic development of the university in connection with the Chinese “One Belt, One Road” initiative and the Transit Route Via Carpatia.

Learning Hungarian and getting to know Hungarian culture was the focus of this year’s Summer University. 154 students enrolled and completed exams at the end of the one month period, with more than 80 percent of them finishing with a certificate of excellence.
Preserving its position last year, the UD is among the best 1000 universities this year again, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities also known as the Shanghaj list. The Chinese ranking list examines and lists universities based on academic results and the number of citations.
Foreign students were tasting stuffed cabbage and learning to do shepherd’s dances from Hajdúság at the folk lore night of the Debrecen Summer School (Nyári Egyetem). In addition to learning Hungarian, these students are also familiarising themselves with Hungarian culture and traditions as well.
The University of Debrecen has been ranked in the top 4% by the Center for World University Rankings, which measures the performance of 20.000 institutions of higher education worldwide. The university was ranked 724 on the CWUR Ranking List published Monday.
The highest number of foreign students, one fifth of all foreign students studying in Hungary, continue to choose UD to study at. This coming autumn more than 2000 „freshmen” will start their university studies in Debrecen.
As a result of the general application procedure, 7420 first-year students can start their university studies in the Hungarian language trainings of the UD, 12 % up from last year. the number of all students admitted to the university during this calendar year has reached ten thousand.
Preparations for the expansion of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Debrecen, the renovation of the Chemistry Building and the construction of the new vehicle laboratory are all included in the Hungarian government’s 13 billion forints’ worth of education package.

Arieh Warshel, a worlwide-renowned biochemist, has been the first to win the University of Debrecen Science Impact Award (uDEsia) of UD. The Nobel Prize laureate researcher received the award from rector Zoltán Szilvássy on 29 March.
