A joint research of the Institute of Botany of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management and the Institute of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy of the Faculty of Medicine was launched in 2021 with the purpose of finding new ways to increase the yield and quality of corn. Experts involved in the project have recently reported on the results achieved so far at a workshop.

This weekend the summer series of graduation ceremonies will begin at the University of Debrecen. In the weeks to come, about 4,000 graduates will receive their degrees. The first ceremonies will be held on 17 June, Friday, at 10 am and at 13 am, when students of the Faculty of Economics and Business will graduate at the Cour d’Honneur of the Main Building.

On Saturday, a ceremony was held in the Hall of the Main Building of the University of Debrecen, where research degrees and honorary titles were awarded. At the event 96 new doctors representing 5 areas of science received their degrees, and the Habilitation, Professor Emeritus, Civis honoris causa and Doctor honoris causa titles were also awarded.

The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen and the Faculty of Animal Sciences of the Indonesian Gadjah Mada University have signed an agreement on cooperation in education and research and on furthering the international relations of the two institutions. According to the agreement, a scientific exchange programme will be launched jointly by the two universities.

“Space peppers” grown by the University of Debrecen (UD) in the space capsule Capsitron, on display at the exhibition Álmok Álmodói 20, have been harvested recently. The closed crop production ecosystem used in the research project DE SPACE has indeed produced delectable and crunchy vegetables. In fact, experts from UD participating in the project have studied several pepper species with the aim of selecting the ones that promised the largest yield in the smallest area with zero emission.

The University of Debrecen is among the best 500 universities in the new QS World Rankings in the subject area of sciences. UD has maintained its leading position among Hungarian universities in the field of agricultural sciences (201-250.), and is still in the 351-400 range in the medical sciences ranking of the prestigious London-based organization.

The Ministry of Innovation and Technology and the Association of Hungarian PhD and DLA Candidates agreed on upgrading the support system of young researchers at the University of Debrecen. At the event the infrastructural development projects completed in the last 5 years to the value of HUF 8 billion were presented, and deputy state secretary Balázs Hankó talked about further opportunities.

The UD won the Breeding Award of the National Association of Hungarian Horse Breeders in the XXVIII. Great Plain Livestock and Farmer Days. At the largest animal breeding show in the country, the Gidran mare named DE Schemer Gidran I-54 (Serény) won the breed competition.

Szabolcs Szanyi, senior lecturer of the Institute of Plant Protection of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of UD has won the UNESCO MAB Young Scientists Award. He has been conducting research into the Bereg Plain for years.

Major topics of the conference at ZAMAT Festival included the most recent culinary trends, gastronomy as a factor in rural development, and the importance of functional foods and catering services. At the event, UD won the first prize for its “debreceni páros” that was developed at the university.

The full genomic sequence of lentil is currently explored with the help of a supercomputer at the UD by the researchers of Centre for Agricultural Genomics and Biotechnology. This research has been selected as one of the ten most interesting projects of Governmental Agency for IT Development.

Researchers from the Agricultural Genomics and Biotechnology Center of the University of Debrecen and the AKIT Research Institute in Nyíregyháza have developed a virus removal procedure that is three times more effective than the one before.

Due to the high number of graduating students and the restrictions introduced during the pandemic situation, the UD organized its closing ceremony at the Nagyerdei Stadium, like last year. On Saturday, students of four faculties celebrated the end of their university studies.

After a long time, the University of Debrecen was finally able to hold a doctoral inauguration. The leadership of the university conferred Ph D and diplomas in the morning of the 5 June event and habilitation diplomas, as well as Professor Emeritus titles and awards in the afternoon.

Bertalan Farkas has visited the UD recently. The first Hungarian cosmonaut had left the planet Earth behind 41 years ago, on May 26, 1980, taking off from Baikonur, Russia, on board the spaceship Soyuz-36.

The University of Debrecen continues to be among the top 450 universities according to the thematic list ranking life sciences and general medicine most recently issued by the prestigious London-based organization QS (Quacquarelli Symonds).

Associate professor László Stündl has been appointed Dean of Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management (MÉK) of the University of Debrecen by Rector Zoltán Szilvássy. The new head has taken over the management of the faculty as of July 1.

Graduating students of the University of Debrecen received their diplomas this year in Nagyerdei Stadion. The celebration of the completion of their studies took place in front of a crowd of several thousand spectators on the arena floor of the state-of-the-art sports facility of Debrecen.

The observation of the signs of climate change was one of the objectives of a 5-week expedition to Antarctica. László Radócz, head of the Institute of Plant Protection of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of UD was the only Hungarian member of the team.
