The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen and the Faculty of Animal Sciences of the Indonesian Gadjah Mada University have signed an agreement on cooperation in education and research and on furthering the international relations of the two institutions. According to the agreement, a scientific exchange programme will be launched jointly by the two universities.

- The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen puts great emphasis on enhancing its international presence and on expanding its contact network. Currently, the Faculty has 130 international students, and this number is continuously growing. Through facilitating student and teacher mobility between the two universities, the agreement aims to lay the foundations for cooperation in the fields of agriculture and food industry between the two parties, which are both among the major universities with agricultural programmes in their respective countries. According to plan, the cooperation will also include international research projects in the future – explained László Stündl, dean of the  Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management after describing the scientific activities of the Faculty.

László Stündl pointed out that the launch of a degree programme in animal health, which may also be attractive for international students, will be a key step in the development of the educational system of the faculty.

With its 18 faculties and 27 research centres, Gadjah Mada University is the most prestigious, as well as the oldest and largest, university in Indonesia.

- Similarly to UD, Gadjah Mada University has a broad international network. The strong presence of the agricultural faculty of the University of Debrecen on the international scene offers a great opportunity for our students and teachers. Currently, there are four faculties at Gadjah Mada University dealing with different sectors of agriculture. Their infrastructural background includes research laboratories, food production facilities and experimental sites. We are happy to share our experience in tropical agriculture with our European partners – said Budi Guntoro, dean of the Faculty of Animal Sciences of Gadjah Mada University.

After signing the agreement, István Komlósi, head of the Doctoral School of Animal Science of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of UD introduced the research areas and recent results of the Institute of Animal Science, Biotechnology and Nature.

- In addition to the consequences of climate change, we can work together with the Indonesian university on topics like the comparison of the nutritional value of alternative protein sources or microbial digestion within the framework of our joint research programme. We also plan to cooperate in the areas of precision farming and ethology, both in education and in further training – said István Komlósi to hirek.unideb.hu.

Besides cooperation in research and education, the agreement also involves plans for the joint organisation of presentations, conferences, seminars and symposiums.
