On the ESA Day held at ATOMKI on Thursday, European Space Agency (ESA) staff members could take a look at the relevant instrument park of the University of Debrecen and the Nuclear Research Institute of Eötvös Loránd Kutatási Hálózat [Eötvös Loránd Research Network] as well as learn about the investigations related to space research conducted here. Hungary’s Ministerial Commissioner for Space Research Ms. Orsolya Ferencz also participated in the event.

The new building of the Faculty of Pharmacy of UD will serve as a facility for low-volume manufacturing of medicinal products, medical food and dietary supplements, in addition to education and research. Designed by the Pyxis Nautica Architect Studio, the National Manufacturing, Research and Educational Facility will be constructed in 2023.

The number of foreign students at the University of Debrecen continues to grow. In September, more than two thousand students will begin their studies on the university’s English language courses. In the academic year 2022/23, it is expected that more than 7,200 people, more than a fifth of the foreign students studying in Hungary, will be studying at the University of Debrecen.

This year’s Campus Festival set a new record: more than 116,000 people attended one of Hungary’s largest summer cultural events, the organisers announced on Monday. There was also much interest in the festival’s university-related programs. Tens of thousands of people visited the booths and the stage of the University of Debrecen during the four days of the festival.

As a result of the general admission procedure, a total of 6,502 first-year students can start their studies from September in the Hungarian-language programmes of the University of Debrecen. The number of students admitted in 2022, including additional admissions, students from abroad, as well as those admitted to the English-language courses, is expected to reach 10,000 by September.

After a gap of two years due to the pandemic, the Summer School at the University of Debrecen has organised its traditional Hungarian-language in-person courses with 108 participants coming from 35 countries. In addition to language classes, students participate in language improvement, conversation, sports and cultural programs between 18 July and 12 August.

Mr. Hamane Niang, president of the International Basketball Association, visited the University of Debrecen on Thursday. The sports diplomat praised the sports life of the university and the coordinated system of medicine, sports and research.

The Ministry of Technology and Industry is strengthening its cooperation with the University of Debrecen in areas of strategic importance for the country. The focus of the long-term agreement signed on Thursday is the health industry, the vehicle and energy industries.

More than 36 million HUF was raised during the charity fundraising event linked to the Concert for Peace organized by the board of trustees of the István Tisza University of Debrecen Foundation, supported by the University of Debrecen, to help Ukrainian refuges. The donations are at the disposal of five aid organizations to spend to provide for a support people who are in a difficult situation due to the war.

This weekend the summer series of graduation ceremonies will begin at the University of Debrecen. In the weeks to come, about 4,000 graduates will receive their degrees. The first ceremonies will be held on 17 June, Friday, at 10 am and at 13 am, when students of the Faculty of Economics and Business will graduate at the Cour d’Honneur of the Main Building.

During his visit on Wednesday, Saud Alshamsi, the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Hungary, discussed opportunities for cooperation in the fields of education, research and innovation at the University of Debrecen with Rector Zoltán Szilvássy. Among other things, they also touched upon the corporate ecosystem surrounding the institution and the UAE's economic development efforts.

On Saturday, a ceremony was held in the Hall of the Main Building of the University of Debrecen, where research degrees and honorary titles were awarded. At the event 96 new doctors representing 5 areas of science received their degrees, and the Habilitation, Professor Emeritus, Civis honoris causa and Doctor honoris causa titles were also awarded.

In the most recent rankings released by RUR (Round University Ranking), the University of Debrecen is ranked the highest among institutions of higher education in Hungary in the key area of financial sustainability. As regards the global or overall ranking position, our institution is the best among Hungarian universities, occupying the 450th place in the latest rankings prepared by the Moscow-based independent international world university ranking system.

Avram Hershko, a world famous chemist from Israel has received this year’s University of Debrecen Science Impact Award (uDEsia) at UD. The Nobel laureate researcher received the university’s highest scientific award from László Csernoch, vice rector for scientific affairs.

The University of Debrecen is ranked as the best Hungarian university in the most recent Impact Rankings list released by Times Higher Education in the categories Partnership for the goals and Decent work and economic growth. The prestigious British collector of performance data has ranked more than 1400 institutions of higher education worldwide, out of which UD has been ranked 401-600.

The University of Debrecen is further strengthening its cooperation based on knowledge transfer with Uzbekistan. Rector Zoltán Szilvássy, held talks with Ambassador Abat Fayzullaev on education and R&D cooperation in the fields of pharmaceutical science and industry, as well as agricultural science.

The Faculty of Informatics of the University of Debrecen offers courses to prepare students for Microsoft’s cloud-based artificial intelligence and Azure international industry certification exams. The courses, which are available both in English and in Hungarian, will help students to successfully complete these competitive international exams.

Mr. Gunnar Saeter, professor of the Center for Comprehensive Oncology at the University Clinic of Oslo (N), and a member of the Scientific and Social Advisory Board (TTTT), which assists the work of the Chairperson of the Board of the Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen, visited the University on Friday. The Norwegian professor gave a presentation on some new opportunities in cancer research.

The Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen has called on the leaders of the city and the heads of the historical churches to work together and use the strength of this togetherness to help the people in need due to the Ukrainian - Russian conflict. On May 6, a large-scale relief concert will be held together with fundraising.

The section responsible for higher education of OECD’s Education Directorate had a coordination meeting with the leadership representatives on the digitalization efforts of the University of Debrecen in the framework of the project Minőségi digitális felsőoktatás biztosítása Magyarországon [Support for Quality Digital Higher Education in Hungary]. The experts and students of the university conducted an online conference with the members of the OECD staff on Tuesday.

Campus, probably the cushiest summer festival in Hungary, will offer a variety of cultural and artistic events and a colorful medley of popular music on as many as nine stages and six more premises this year. The University of Debrecen is also to present an assortment of curiosities of science and scholarship at the location called Egyetem Tér [University Square] of Campus Fesztivál.

Elias Arnér, a biochemist from the renowned Karolinska Institute of Stockholm, has visited the University of Debrecen to give a presentation on his area of research. Professor Arnér, who is also a member of Tudományos és Társadalmi Tanácsadó Testület (TTTT), an academic and social advisory body to support the work of the president of the Board of Trustees of Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen, was the first “instructor” to register a grade in the symbolic grade book of TTTT following his talk.

The foundation Gróf Tisza István Debreceni Egyetemért Alapítvány [Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen] and the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen jointly sent a significant amount of medical and healthcare aid on Monday to Ternopil National Medical University and to Ternopil City Municipal Hospital no. 2. The aid package is meant to assist and facilitate the neurosurgical treatment services provided in these institutions.

The application of the University of Debrecen for students has been expanded with new functions. As a result of the improvements, the system sends users the most important information in push messages, with the UD Community Space creating a new way for students for ongoing contact.

Visitors of the Puskás Day, organised at the Hungarian Pavilion of the Dubai World Expo, were able to familiarize themselves with the innovative sports strategy and sports infrastructural and sport economic developments of the University of Debrecen, and with the organisational structure, operational model and achievements of DEAC.
