Three famous Hungarian professors of mathematics will be welcomed this week at a five-day mathematics conference at the University of Debrecen. The 120 mathematicians from almost all parts of the world gathered in honor of Kálmán Győry of Debrecen, among others.

A joint research of the Institute of Botany of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management and the Institute of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy of the Faculty of Medicine was launched in 2021 with the purpose of finding new ways to increase the yield and quality of corn. Experts involved in the project have recently reported on the results achieved so far at a workshop.

The Section of Chemical Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences named a study prepared by Környezeti Kolloidok Kutatócsoport [Environmental Colloids Research Group] of the Department of Physical Chemistry of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Debrecen “Publication of the month” in May 2022. The study, including the research findings on the interaction of carbon aerogels with water, was published in the prestigious international academic journal Carbon.

Professor Péter Nagy, Chairman of the Scientific and Social Advisory Board of the President of the Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen, has recently delivered a lecture at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on research efforts that have the potential to influence the basics of oncology by sorting out the role of cysteine amino acid components. The focus of the research project is the hydrogen sulfide gas molecule responsible for the bad smell of rotten eggs, of which only toxic effects had been noted by scientists for a long time.

A new solution jointly developed by the University of Debrecen, Delta Services and Sightspot Network will make the diagnosis of cervical cancer faster and more reliable, allowing doctors to start treatment at an early stage. The new solution is an image-based diagnostic system, which is able to identify cancer cells based on deep learning technology.

This year the Department of Dutch Studies of the Faculty of Humanities of UD will host the online conference of the Commission for Eastern and Central European and Dutch Inter-University Cooperation (COMENIUS). Eleven countries will be represented at the event that will take place on 26-27 May.

An the international conference entitled “Education in Family, Family in Education” has been organised jointly by the Faculty of Education for Children and Special Educational Needs of UD and the John Paul II University Krakow. At the 2-day conference scientists presented their most recent research findings in areas like educational science, social pedagogy and sociology.

Avram Hershko, a world famous chemist from Israel has received this year’s University of Debrecen Science Impact Award (uDEsia) at UD. The Nobel laureate researcher received the university’s highest scientific award from László Csernoch, vice rector for scientific affairs.

Students who are currently enrolled in the English-language programs offered by the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) were given presentations at an event organized by the International Student Union (ISU) on the academic work conducted at the FST, the possibilities for getting involved in TDK (Student Scientific Conference) and on the talent management programs conducted by the university.

“Space peppers” grown by the University of Debrecen (UD) in the space capsule Capsitron, on display at the exhibition Álmok Álmodói 20, have been harvested recently. The closed crop production ecosystem used in the research project DE SPACE has indeed produced delectable and crunchy vegetables. In fact, experts from UD participating in the project have studied several pepper species with the aim of selecting the ones that promised the largest yield in the smallest area with zero emission.

The entries that had made it to the final of the students’ competition on the subject of the psychological aspects of human-robot interactions were exhibited and awarded at the Department of Psychology of the University of Debrecen on Thursday. The programme was also a contribution of the Faculty of Humanities to the university’s Neurotech project.

A world-class electronic manufacturing technology laboratory has been set up at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Debrecen. The laboratory installed at the Department of Electrical Engineering through a cooperation between UD and its partner companies offers an industrial environment where students can become familiar with cutting-edge manufacturing technologies.

The new software in the equipment pool of the Faculty of Informatics at the University of Debrecen is routinely used in research and development related to autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence. The special piece of equipment inaugurated on Thursday will assist the vehicle research activities of the institution, which are of strategic significance.

The University of Debrecen is further strengthening its cooperation based on knowledge transfer with Uzbekistan. Rector Zoltán Szilvássy, held talks with Ambassador Abat Fayzullaev on education and R&D cooperation in the fields of pharmaceutical science and industry, as well as agricultural science.

Mr. Gunnar Saeter, professor of the Center for Comprehensive Oncology at the University Clinic of Oslo (N), and a member of the Scientific and Social Advisory Board (TTTT), which assists the work of the Chairperson of the Board of the Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen, visited the University on Friday. The Norwegian professor gave a presentation on some new opportunities in cancer research.

Visitors of the Puskás Day, organised at the Hungarian Pavilion of the Dubai World Expo, were able to familiarize themselves with the innovative sports strategy and sports infrastructural and sport economic developments of the University of Debrecen, and with the organisational structure, operational model and achievements of DEAC.

NI (National Instruments) has provided yet another donation for the engineering, science and technology programs offered at the University of Debrecen. At the official donation ceremony held on Wednesday, the Faculty of Engineering received HUF 4 million worth of technological support, while the share of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the same was HUF 7.4 million.

State-of-the-art facilities and equipment are available for a variety of materials science examinations, structural analysis and the production of samples in Debreceni Egyetem – Atommagkutató Intézet Anyagtudományi Kutatóhálózat [Materials Science Research Network of the Institute for Nuclear Research and the University of Debrecen]. The National Research, Development and Innovation Office has recently awarded the title “Top 50 Kutatási Infrastruktúra” [Top 50 Research Infrastructure] to this unique network of laboratories.

As a participant in a 26-member European consortium, the University of Debrecen has become one of the winners of the HORIZON-INFRA-2021 tender. The NMR Instrument Center of the Institute of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science and Technology is to join an international network formed to solve problems related to material structure, chemistry and biology.

Members of an official delegation from Kazakhstan, representing the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (Almaty, Kazakhstan), have visited the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Debrecen in order to learn about research conducted here in the fields of biology, botany, genomics and microbiology.

Nobel Prize-winning American scientist and pharmacologist Louis Joseph Ignarro, professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, who shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in medicine for his discovery of the physiological effects of nitric oxide, as well as members of the Nobel Prize Committee, professors from renowned foreign universities, Hungarian academicians, university professors, the former rector of the University of Debrecen and a number of internationally renowned experts have accepted the invitation to become members of the Scientific and Social Advisory Board established for the further development of the University of Debrecen.

The Proteomics Core Facility of the University of Debrecen, which primarily focuses on studying proteins, has been recognised as one of the best research facilities in Hungary. The compilation of the list that contains the best 50 Hungarian research facilities was initiated by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office.

The network made up of research units of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen is the only cluster that has made it to the TOP50 list of research infrastructures in the field of agricultural and food sciences, compiled by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office.

In the framework of a multi-year project, researchers of the Laboratory of Biomechanics of the University of Debrecen have developed trial implants of a joint endoprosthesis using tissue-friendly titanium alloy, 3D printing technology, and a new type of fastening principle. The new solutions are expected to appear in clinical practice soon.

Several of the research facilities of the University of Debrecen appear on the list of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, which contains the best 50 Hungarian research laboratories.
