Certified Agricultural Cluster

The network made up of research units of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen is the only cluster that has made it to the TOP50 list of research infrastructures in the field of agricultural and food sciences, compiled by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office.

The network ranked among the best 50 research infrastructures in Hungary by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office is made up of eight research units of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen. As explained at the certificate-giving ceremony, the Agricultural and Food Innovation Research Infrastructure of the University of Debrecen is a complex system that, in line with the principles of sustainable agriculture, applies the model of circular biology-based economy.

- The members of the cluster can take care of the examination and analysis of the whole food chain from ingredients to products in changing biotic and abiotic environments. The uniquely complex structure enhances and strengthens the multidisciplinary role of the University of Debrecen in the fields of education and research in the basin of the river Tisza - explained László Stündl, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management.

He added that the work performed by the eight research units of the Faculty demonstrates how knowledge transfer, as well as research, development and innovation can be done at international level.

- The activities of the Agricultural and Food Innovation Research Infrastructure of the University of Debrecen cover the whole spectrum of precision farming from the cultivation of plants on land and in gardens to animal farming, fish biology, soil and water management systems, food technology, digitalization and robotics. The complexity of the research infrastructure reflects the strength and research potential of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of UD, and that it is able to provide a wide range of services to the agricultural and the food industry - pointed out Szilvia Veres, vice dean for scientific affairs.

She added that the certificate of excellence is a guarantee for reliable and high-quality services, which is increasingly in demand today.

- Actors of the sector concerned admit that the efficiency of production can be significantly improved only if the businesses operating in the sector use research services in order to enhance added value, broaden their product range, reduce environmental damages, and to develop technologies. This is where the “Excellent Research Infrastructure” of the Faculty can support businesses – said Szilvia Veres.

This is the first time that the National Research, Development and Innovation Office has recognised the best research infrastructures in Hungary. The science centres that received the certificate can use the title “Excellent Research Infrastructure”. These units will appear in the database of the Office, which will greatly improve their visibility both in Hungary and abroad, and may facilitate the establishment of contacts and partnerships in the relevant fields.
