Dr. Ildikó Horváth, Director of the Pulmonology Clinic and Professor of the University of Debrecen, will be serving for the next three years as Secretary General of the European Respiratory Society (ERS). The new leader was elected last year and she was formally inducted at the most recent conference of this European organization. She will be the first Hungarian professional to hold the high position of Secretary General.

A delegation from the northeastern Chinese city of Jiamusi was received by the management of the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen on Tuesday. In addition to patient care, the members of the delegation were mainly informed about the activities and training of health visitors. During the visit, the future cooperation opportunities between the universities of the two cities were also discussed.
Topics such as the harmonization of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with medical research, the role of artificial intelligence and network pharmacology, as well as opportunities in next-generation pharmaceuticals and theranostics, were discussed at the Doctor Honoris Causa Symposium on Thursday. At the scientific session, Professor Shao Li– member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Tsinghua University – presented his research findings. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Debrecen on Friday.
Several PhD students and young specialists from the University of Debrecen presented their research findings at the event called European Workshop for Rheumatology Research (EWRR) held in Budapest, Hungary, where they discussed the latest research findings in the fields of cellular immunology, pain, tissue damage, immune tolerance, autoinflammation and autoimmunity.
The Department of Surgery of the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre organized a symposium entitled Robotic Surgery for Everyone (Robotsebészet mindenkinek) on the experiences gained since the launch of the Robotic Surgery Centre last April. The event, held at the Headquarters of the Debrecen Regional Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (DAB), was dedicated to a discussion of the place, role and results of robot-assisted surgery in clinical practice in Debrecen, including an overview of the particularities of each medical specialty.
An international conference on muscle relaxation in surgery and related anaesthesia patient safety was organised by the Tassonyi Edömér Neuromuscular Working Group of the Department of Anaesthesiology, University of Debrecen Clinical Centre. Participants discussed the most important theoretical and practical issues related to the use of muscle relaxants in surgery during the two-day professional programme in Budapest.
A new 20-bed inpatient unit of the Gastroenterology Clinic in the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen has been opened recently at Kenézy Gyula Campus. This ward is to treat primarily patients suffering from pancreatic and biliary diseases, and it has been designed to provide an even higher level of patient care than before. The activities of the new unit were presented to the management of the Clinical Center on Monday.
The catheter aortic valve implantation performed at the Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre was shown live on Wednesday to the participants of an international conference in India. The clinic's staff has a wealth of experience in this field, having performed more than seven hundred such procedures to date. The surgery was carried out in a state-of-the-art hybrid laboratory, built with a budget of around one billion forints.
The new CT scanner, which was inaugurated at the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen, enables faster examinations and more precise diagnoses for patients. This world-class CT scanner will aid the diagnosis and treatment of cardiology patients, and will assist in cardiac and thoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, and oncological surgery as well. The high-tech equipment was acquired through a unique financing arrangement.
In Hungary, it is only the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen that can offer a state-funded FotoFinder-assisted examination for the early detection of melanoma. The new imaging device capable of providing such a chance was presented to a professional audience at this year's Regional Dermatology and Allergology Forum. At their two-day meeting, which started on Friday, the attending specialists also discussed the most recently available therapeutic options for allergic and immunological diseases.
