The University of Pattimura, Indonesia, and Debreceni Egyetem (DE) [University of Debrecen (UD)] have signed a framework agreement on cooperation that will facilitate student exchanges, faculty mobility and academic collaboration in the future, primarily in the fields of teacher training, ethnography and cultural anthropology, as well as psychological sciences.

The Department of Surgery of the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre organized a symposium entitled Robotic Surgery for Everyone (Robotsebészet mindenkinek) on the experiences gained since the launch of the Robotic Surgery Centre last April. The event, held at the Headquarters of the Debrecen Regional Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (DAB), was dedicated to a discussion of the place, role and results of robot-assisted surgery in clinical practice in Debrecen, including an overview of the particularities of each medical specialty.

As many as 96 newly-hooded Ph.D.-s of the University of Debrecen (UD) took their oath and received their PhD degrees last Saturday. The titles habilitated doctor and the awards Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen - University of Debrecen Publication Awards (Gróf Tisza István Debreceni Egyetemért Alapítvány (GTIDEA)–Debreceni Egyetem Publikációs Díj) were also conferred and presented at a ceremony in the venue called Aula of our Main Building.

The University of Debrecen and the company Beijing LINEMILES Technology are to launch a cooperation project in order to promote Sino-Hungarian technological innovation and the development of the start-up and spin-off ecosystem of the University of Debrecen. The relevant strategic partnership agreement was signed at the University of Debrecen on Monday.

The Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management and the Faculty of Science and Technology will host an international conference this year as part of the Debrecen University Symposium. The University of Debrecen (UD/DE) Scientific Council decided on the winners of the competition at its meeting last week.

The University of Debrecen has recently made its debut among the top 400 universities in the field of pharmacy and pharmacology according to the latest QS thematic list. The British ranking company Quacquarelli Symonds has ranked UD in four new fields of science. An exhibition of models and photographs focusing on the modern architecture of Brno between the two world wars has been opened at the community space known as Szárító műhely (Drying House) of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Debrecen, on the street called Szombathi István utca. The exhibition will be open to the public until April 8.

It is the University of Debrecen again that will host this year's Hungarian round of the scientific competition of Rosatom, one of the largest nuclear energy companies in the world. Following the online format of previous years, the Hackatom nuclear energy problem-solving competition will be held this year for the first time with physical attendance of the participants. Rector Zoltán Szilvássy has discussed the details with the program coordinator and the delegation from Tomsk Polytechnic University.

Occasionally, there might be cases when you even have to take an Olympic champion by the hand in order to help them muster enough courage to just sit for an exam. Apart from providing study organization assistance and advice, this sort of personal motivation is the “secret” of the mentoring program offered by the University of Debrecen. It cannot simply be by chance that more than a hundred top athletes have already graduated from UD without having to make a choice between sport and study.

A delegation from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics visited at the University of Debrecen recently to hold talks on channels of cooperation in education and mobility. This institution of higher education, which is one of China's leading universities producing unmanned aerial vehicles, is now planning to offer dual degree courses.

On Wednesday, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Hungary visited the University of Debrecen to learn about the University's expanding international industrial and higher education partner network, its research and development projects, talent education and cultural activities. Gong Tao also visited two research laboratories of the Faculty of Science and Technology.

The Ningbo City Agricultural and Rural Development Office is launching an agricultural partnership with the University of Debrecen. A delegation from the major Chinese port and commercial centre plans to launch educational and scientific links, details of which were set out in a cooperation agreement during a visit to the university.

The University of Debrecen has signed a research, innovation and technology cooperation agreement with a Chinese delegation. The strategic partnership covers the fields of medicine, therapeutic procedures, drug and food development, and artificial intelligence-based research and development, among others. The document recording this was signed by the parties at the University of Debrecen.

Delegations from Lankaran State University (Azerbaijan) and Karshi Engineering Economics Institute (Uzbekistan) visited the University of Debrecen recently. Both of these institutions wish to strengthen their current mobility and educational cooperation with us.

The ambassador of Egypt to Hungary has offered the University of Debrecen the possibility of joining the Egyptian International University Campus. Ms. Heba Negm held talks with our institution's leaders on Thursday and she also met with Egyptian students enrolled here.

PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans with radioactively labeled glucose are essential in the diagnosis of patients with tumors and in the exact determination of their therapy. The first PET examination in Hungary was conducted in Debrecen in 1994. Since then, the University of Debrecen has played an important part in launching all PET testing sites in our country, either by transferring knowledge or by providing human resources.

The number of foreign students at the University of Debrecen has increased by five percent, while the number of foreign students studying at the University of Debrecen has increased by fifteen percent. In the 2024/2025 academic year, 2,100 students started their studies on UD's English-language courses, making the institution's international community larger than ever, with more than 7,600 students.

The University of Debrecen and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research have signed a cooperation agreement. The multidisciplinary international centre for basic research in nuclear physics and related science and technology invites researchers from Debrecen to participate in projects in its seven laboratories.

Andrew Victor Schally, Nobel Prize-winning scientist, Polish-American biochemist, professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine, head of the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center Endocrine, Polypeptide and Cancer Institute, and honorary doctor of the University of Debrecen, has died at the age of 98.

Representatives of the Monitoring Committee of the Council of Europe have met and held discussions with the Board of Trustees of Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen, responsible for maintaining our institution. Greek MEP George Papandreou said he considered the meeting useful and underlined that they would be working on a solution that is acceptable to all parties involved.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, representing the Central Asian state of Uzbekistan, has discussed research development projects, the expansion of the already existing international relations and the possibilities of increasing the number of Uzbek students enrolled at the University of Debrecen with Rector of the University of Debrecen Zoltán Szilvássy. His Excellency Oybek Shakhavdinov also had a chance to meet students from his home country after the meeting.

Hosted jointly by the University of Debrecen and EIT Health Innostars, a two-day innovation competition kept our institution vibrant on November 11 and 12. There were almost 150 students from 6 universities in 41 countries entering the 24-hour health-focused competition. The students were supported by renowned international mentors to develop their ideas. At the same time, researchers of our institution had the opportunity to learn more about how to turn an academic idea into a successful business venture in an inspiring conference with the help of the White Unicorn incubator.

The governing body of the Consortium on Applied Research and Professional Education (CARPE) met in Porto. The University of Debrecen was represented at the event by László Csernoch, Vice-Rector for Research and Zsolt Varga, Scientific Director.

Aurelia Skipwith Giacometto, Secretary of the Environment in Louisiana, was presented with the title of Honorary Citizen by the University of Debrecen at a ceremonial Senate meeting held to commemorate the 106th anniversary of the death of Count István Tisza. Appointments and awards were presented at the event, which was attended by descendants of the former Prime Minister.

The University of Debrecen is the only Hungarian institution of higher education that has become a member of a partner university network of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), called University Network for Research Collaboration. This year's presidential forum and conference of this network, which brought together 15 institutions from 11 countries worldwide with the aim to promote sustainable development globally, was held in Chongqing, where Vice Rector Károly Pető officially received a membership plaque.
