UD: among the most popular institutions of higher education, even outside Hungary

The number of international students at the University of Debrecen continues to grow further. This year, around 2000 new students from foreign countries will be enrolled at our university and, in total, more than 7500 international students are expected to start their fall semester at UD as of September.

The University of Debrecen is still very popular among students from abroad this year, with more than 31,000 applications received for the 2024-2025 academic year, targeting one of the more than 80 different types of programs advertised.

“It is a well-known fact that our University has the largest number of international students among all of the Hungarian institutions of higher education. This international recognition and popularity of the University of Debrecen is visibly reflected in the student community from more than 100 different countries around the world. We offer English-language courses in more than eighty degree programs for students from abroad. During the course of this year's admission procedure, the positive trend of previous years has continued in terms of the number of applicants and admissions, with the headcount of international students expected to exceed seventy-five thousand from September. Strengthening the international image of our institution in the field of education and research is indeed an important element of the strategy of UD,” said Elek Bartha, Vice-Rector for Education of the University of Debrecen, to hirek.unideb.hu.

The high number of applications has contributed to our institution's continued popularity in the scholarship program Stipendium Hungaricum, where this year's figures exceeded the record number of applications in 2023 by more than 15 percent. In addition, UD's tuition fee-paying programs received a number of applications that is 22% higher than last year.

“Overall, the Coordinating Center for International Education had registered more than 31,000 applications and, after the admission procedure, we admitted 4,814 applicants. Following the decision of the Board of Trustees of the Tempus Public Foundation, 753 of these students were awarded Stipendium Hungaricum scholarships. So, including those in tuition fee-paying programs, approximately as many as 2,000 students who have accepted the admission decision will start the fall semester of studies in September. All in all, it is expected that, in the 2024-2025 academic year, around 7,500 foreign students will be able to study at our university in English,” said Attila Jenei, Director of the Coordinating Center for International Education at UD.

Director Jenei added that housing would remain a key issue, which could affect the number of applicants in the long run; therefore, our institution is trying to help solve this problem in a number of different ways.
