Erasmus, one of the most successful mobility programs of the European Union, celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. Over the decades, more than 10 million people worldwide have experienced the Erasmus feeling. The aim of the #ErasmusDays series of events is to show the diversity of the program and the opportunities inherent in mobility.
- Erasmus, listening to the needs of the participants, is capable of continuous renewal. The main objectives of the new program phase, which started in 2021, are inclusion, digitalization and "green Erasmus". In the spirit of inclusion, in addition to traditional forms of student mobility, part-time training and professional practice, there are also short, 1-2 week study trip-type mobility opportunities for doctoral students, or BIPs (Blended Intensive Programs), in which a short study trip is complemented by work done from home in the form of online training. In addition, students can also apply for an equal opportunity grant to the amount of 250 euros to complement their scholarship. The short programs make this international experience available to students, too, who work alongside their studies or already have families and cannot spend months abroad. The University’s Erasmus coordinator Péter Gara highlighted: approximately 300 students from the University of Debrecen (DE) travel abroad annually for part-time training or professional internships, primarily to European Union countries. Since 2021, however, students have also been able to apply to overseas partner universities within the framework of the Erasmus program. This year they will also travel to Japan and South Korea.
- The program is also very popular among lecturers; they can use the mobility opportunities for lecturers and training grants, primarily to the Erasmus program countries. We have won support with nineteen partner countries in the Erasmus International Credit Mobility Program, so our instructors can travel to Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, South Africa or even Australia, Peter Gara pointed out.
This year, the joint, mobility-promoting events of the International Office and the Foreign Affairs Committee of The Student Government of the University of Debrecen (DEHÖK), are also integrally linked to the European Union’s series of events. However, in line with the schedule of UD students, the #ErasmusDays programs will start at the University of Debrecen as early as on Wednesday, October 12.
Teachers are primarily invited to the Erasmus Teahouse on October 12 from 6 p.m. in the Sesztina Villa, where they can learn about the forms of cooperation supported by the Erasmus program. In addition to mobility opportunities, Erasmus Mundus joint master's programs, strategic partnerships, and Blended Intensive Programs will be discussed. In the Teahouse, instructors who have been actively participating in the programs for many years share their experience.

This time, too, the central program element of #ErasmusDays is the Foreign Exchange Platform. Students can find out about study opportunities, professional internships, summer camps, and foreign language courses abroad in the main building of the University of Debrecen between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, following tradition. Organizers expect around 30 exhibitors this year.
According to indications received by the International Office, the interest of UD’s foreign students in the mobility program is increasing, so on Friday, October 14; an English-language Mobility Café event will be organized for them in the Sesztina villa. At the event, foreign students can also receive information about the overlaps and rules of the support systems, for example, that Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship students unfortunately cannot win an Erasmus scholarship during their studies in Hungary due to the strict rules of the SH program.

At #ErasmusDays, the faculties also await those interested with diverse programs. The Institute of English and American Studies of the Faculty of Arts, UD, will organize a lecture on Malaysia, Maya culture and language, at 2 p.m., on October 14, attended by the Malaysian Ambassador to Hungary as well as lecturers from Sunway University, Kuala Lumpur. In Hajdúböszörmény, at the Faculty of Child Education and Special Needs Education Hungarian students will report on their experience abroad on 13 October, while on 14 October they will organize a an international conference to be attended by foreign teachers who came to UD as part of the program.
