Our Turkic Corner was crowded with people for the afternoon tea party held specifically for students from Kazakhstan, with quite a few of them arriving in their traditional national costumes. These young people, affiliated with a variety of faculties, including Medicine, Engineering, Informatics, Science and Technology, and Agricultural and Food Science and Environmental Management, chatted informally over tea and biscuits to get to know each other and to share their experiences about Hungary.
- We had set two goals for this event. On the one hand, we inetnded to introduce students from Central Asia to the Turkic Corner, which we had established in December 2024 in order to showcase the cultural heritage of the individual countries involved by sharing their traditions and fostering our partnerships. On the other hand, this venue can also serve as a convenient meeting point for them, since they study different academic fields at various departments and faculties, which is why they are not necessarily familiar with one another- said Okszána Kiszil, the initiator of this series of events.
The director of coordination and strategy of our university recalled the inauguration of the Turkic Corner in her welcome speech delivered at the event, when the ceremonial opening had been attended by high-ranking diplomats from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkey and the Turkic Council. She also noted that it was in November 2025 that the University of Debrecen had become a full member of the Union of Turkic Universities.
Apart from the opportunities available at the Turkic Corner, the various language courses offered by the Russian Cultural and Language Center were also discussed, following which the students shared their experiences and insights concerning our university. During the course of this conversation, they unanimously expressed their delight and gratitude for this initiative, while they concluded the meeting by taking group photos to make it even more memorable. The participants who arrived wearing their traditional national costumes also received small symbolic gifts.
This Monday marked the first event in the tea house series and, in the coming weeks, the Turkic Corner will also host students from Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, who are all enrolled at the University of Debrecen. The next occasion is scheduled for Thursday, March 26, when the community space in the Main Building will entertain young people from Uzbekistan.
