International recognition for thoracic surgery in Debrecen

Thoracic Surgery Department (TSD) of the Surgical Clinic of the University of Debrecen has once again received accreditation from the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS), confirming that this institution provides European-level care to patients. TSD first earned this prestigious international certification back in 2012, becoming the first such institution in Eastern Europe to do so. Since then, the certificate has had to be reearned every five years based on strict criteria.

- This accreditation is not just a prestigious professional recognition but also the confirmation of the fact that thoracic surgery in Debrecen guarantees European-level safety and quality for patients. Our specialists working in the field of thoracic surgery are fully committed to providing excellent medical care, thereby contributing significantly to further strengthening the domestic and international reputation and recognition of the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen- said Professor Zoltán Szabó, President of the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen.

In recognition of its thoracic surgery activities, the department was the first in Eastern Europe to receive certification from the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) in 2012, which confirms that it provides European-level quality care. The relevant quality indicators are continuously monitored and the certificate can be renewed every five years, provided that the institution meets the strict requirements. This accreditation has now been granted until 2030. The Thoracic Surgery Department of the Surgical Clinic plays a key part in our region in terms of professional quality and number of cases, while it also occupies a leading position at the national level.

-  The well-trained thoracic surgery team of our clinic, together with the available state-of-the-art equipment, sets a benchmark for those working in all related fields. We routinely perform a large number of oncological surgeries at our clinic, often encountering, for example, thyroid tumors that spread to the chest cavity, or complex tumors that affect both the abdominal and chest cavities. In these instances, thoracic, oncological, and endocrine surgeons ought to cooperate regularly and closely. In such situations, we can confidently rely on the expertise of thoracic surgeons at our center, as we can rest assured that the patients will be treated with the highest possible level of expertise and care- said Dezső Tóth, Associate Professor and Director of the Surgical Clinic at UD’s Clinical Center.

At the department, there are up to 500 operations performed each year, most of which are lung cancer surgeries. More than 80% of these procedures are conducted by applying minimally invasive techniques, which ensures a faster recovery for patients.

- Surgery performed through an incision of only a few centimeters long is much less stressful for patients than the traditional open surgery. In Europe, minimally invasive procedures make up an average of 30 to 32 percent of all surgeries, while in Hungary, we perform about 80 percent of our surgeries by applying this technique. In fact, in the case of quite a number of diseases, we have been the very first to use it. We were also the first in Hungary to report on a lobectomy, the removal of an entire lobe of the lung, performed entirely with a video endoscope. In cases of chest wall deformities, we were also quick to adopt the so-called Nuss procedure, the endoscopic correction of pectus excavatum. This newly acquired accreditation is the recognition of the top quality of the work of the thoracic surgery team and also a confirmation of the fact that we are on the right professional path- said István Takács, Associate Professor and Head of the Thoracic Surgery Department at UD’s Clinical Center.

Within the scope of general thoracic surgery, the Debrecen department also performs surgical treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the esophagus, changes in the trachea and diaphragm, chest deformities and chest injuries and their complications. In addition, several so-called borderline surgeries are also performed here in cooperation with other departments (e.g., cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, or head and neck surgery).

In recent years, several new procedures have been introduced into everyday practice at the clinic, such as the use of indocyanine green (ICG) and the application of motorized and electric suturing and cutting systems, which significantly expand surgical possibilities in line with new technological trends.
