Mediterranean connections in agricultural sciences

The Centre International de Hautes Études Agronomiques Méditerranéennes (International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies – CIHEAM) supports the internationalization of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Sciences and Environmental Management at the University of Debrecen (MÉK), as well as the expansion and strengthening of their foreign partner networks, according to a statement made during a visit to the university by a delegation from the professional organization representing 13 Mediterranean countries. Experts from CIHEAM Bari learned about the educational portfolio of MÉK and the research results of AKIT.

Founded in 1962, the center's activities are related to sustainable agriculture. Its Italian center, CIHEAM Bari, is involved in postgraduate higher education, applied research, and development cooperation.

- The center's activities include food security, poverty reduction, institutional capacity building, efficient use of natural resources, increasing and utilizing agricultural production and productivity, support for organic farming, development of sustainable food systems, adaptation to climate change, integrated coastal zone management, women's empowerment, and fisheries and aquaculture. CIHEAM Bari works in more than 20 Mediterranean, African, and Asian countries and fosters partnerships with hundreds of institutions, scientific workshops, civil organizations, and businesses in those countries, László Stündl, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management, told hírek.unideb.hu.

István Komlósi, head of the Doctoral School of Animal Sciences at the University of Debrecen, emphasized that international cooperation opens up new opportunities for the Faculty of Agriculture and AKIT in Debrecen, primarily in the areas of drought management, water management, and plant protection.

-Through professional connections and with the support of CIHEAM Bari, the Faculty of Agriculture and the university's agricultural research institute network can join international organizations and networks. The partnership focuses on soil, plant, food, and environmental management in the fields of education and research and development. The international organization's knowledge and achievements in drought management, AKIT's more than 90 years of long-term experiments on sandy soils and MÉK's more than 40 years of long-term field experiments can form the basis for joint thinking, which can greatly contribute to more effective climate change management, emphasized the professor at the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management.

Noureddin Driouech, founder and coordinator of the CIHEAM Bari Alumni Network, and Maroun El Moujabber, coordinator of the CIHEAM Bari doctoral platform and chair of the PRIMA Scientific Advisory Committee, also visited the AKIT Research Institute in Nyíregyháza, and received direct information about the faculty's competencies at several MÉK institutes, which could provide a broad basis for this cooperation.
