Jubilee for the Summer Academy of Musicians

Faculty of Music of the UD will be hosting Young Musicians’ Summer Academy for the twentieth time this year. Applications for participation in the traditional music courses are expected to be submitted by students of high schools, colleges and universities as well as from young teachers of music.

AThe traditional music course of Debreceni Egyetem Zeneművészeti Kar [Faculty of Music of the University of Debrecen] is to kick off at the beginning of August. The faculty, together with Conservatory Foundation, will be celebrating the twentieth jubilee occasion for Ifjú Zeneművészek Nemzetközi Nyári Akadémiája this year to make up for last year’s missed anniversary.

The young music teachers, college and university students and high schools students over the age of 16 can sign up for individual master courses as well as for orchestra and chamber music practices. The minimum number of participants in each individual course is five, while the maximum number is ten. In the classes, the participants may improve their knowledge and technique of music while presenting and polishing their performance skills. There will be almost 30 professors offering their guidance to young musicians in the instrumental and singing master courses.

“From six different countries, as many as twenty-five professors are going to give 5 to 8 days of master courses. Guest lecturers will come from Germany, Austria, Serbia, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Poland in addition to the Hungarian artists and instructors. This is going to be the first time for a number of new musicians to join our efforts, including cellist Tomasz Lisiecki, saxophonist Oskar Laznik, flutists Laura Levai Aksin and Petar Popovič, violinist Orsolya Korcsolán, percussion artist Markus Leoson and pianist Gábor Farkas,” said  Judit Váradi, Artistic Director of Ifjú Zeneművészek Nemzetközi Nyári Akadémiája.

Just like in previous years, a series of concerts held by the professors delivering the master courses will be presented in the evenings at the Faculty of Music under the title Zenés esték a Nagyerdőn [Nights of Music in Debrecen’s Big Forest] for free. The young musicians will get a chance to learn the ropes not only from them but also from one another in the rehearsals of Kodály Zoltán Ifjúsági Világzenekar [Zoltán Kodály World Youth Orchestra], traditionally directed by Kossuth Awardee Tamás Vásáry, world-famous pianist and conductor, who is the holder of Szent István Rend [Order of Saint Stephen] and the title Nemzet Művésze [verbatim: Artist of the Nation]. The series of rehearsal sessions of the world youth orchestra will begin on August 5 under the direction of conductors Andrea Daru and Zoltán Bolyki.

Judit Váradi also added that the world youth orchestra would again give a concert in  Budapest’s Pesti Vigadó, while their closing concert in Debrecen would take place on the square Kossuth tér with the 88-year-old conductor Tamás Vásáry.

Besides the instrumental master courses, there will also be a singing contest held in honor and memory of composer Emil Petrovics, twice Kossuth and Erkel Ferenc awardee. At this challenge of vocal music in the 20th and 21st centuries, even those can compete under the artistic guidance of opera singer, érdemes és kiváló művész [verbatim: worthy and excellent artist] Éva Bátori who do not otherwise participate in the summer academy.

Young performers also will be able to develop their persuasive stage skills with the help of Virág Dezső, a dance instructor living and teaching in the Netherlands, who combines modern mime, song and instrumental music with the art of dancing, while introducing students into the musicality of artistic movement on stage. Details and particulars about his course as well as about the individual instrumental courses and the world youth orchestra are available at the website of the academy (ymsa.unideb.hu).

Ifjú zeneművészek Nemzetközi Nyári Akadémiája will be held between August 5 and 17, 2021, in Liszt Hall of Debreceni Egyetem Zeneművészeti Kara, and the deadline for submitting applications for participation in the courses is June 15.
