A growing community of international students at the Faculty of Health Sciences

During the past couple of years, the number of international students at Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Debrecen (DE ETK), both in Debrecen and Nyíregyháza, has been steadily increasing. By the 2025/2026 academic year, the number of students coming from outside Hungary to enroll at the faculty has reached almost six hundred. According to the deputy dean for academic affairs and education at DE ETK, most young foreigners choose the programs offered by the faculty because of the wide range of courses inherent in them in addition to the professional experience opportunities available and international embeddedness of our institution.

The University of Debrecen has announced more than a hundred different courses in English for the 2025/2026 academic year, including those inpreparatory, BSc, MSc and PhD programs. During the admission process, International Education Coordination Center registered almost 36,000 applications and processed more than 7,000 admission sessions. In the current academic year, we have a total of 7,800 international students studying at the University of Debrecen.

According to the relevant data, there is also an upward trend in English-language courses at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Debrecen, with a significant increase over the past years in the number of training program opportunities, majors and specializations available to international students. Renáta Jávorné Erdei, Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs and Education, said that, in the current academic year, the total number of international students registered at the faculty was 580, of which 179 were enrolled in Nyíregyháza and 401 in Debrecen.

-The interest in medical and health science programs at the University of Debrecen seems stable, including the ones offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences. I reckon that the continuous monitoring of our target group, the regular assessment of their needs and tailoring our courses to those needs indicate that the system works properly and that international students can easily find the areas that are important to them. This effective work results in an increase in student numbers but, of course, the fact that we offer a high level of knowledge within the specializations available also has a significant role in this matter. It is also essential that our students should have confidence in the faculty and be sure that they will receive everything that they need for their professional development here- said the deputy dean.

Renáta Jávorné Erdei also noted that the members of the teaching staff involved in English-language training in Nyíregyháza are now able to convey theoretical and practical knowledge perfectly in line with their language skills. The faculty facilitates this by operating a support system that encourages students to perform well in the areas of external practice, too, as it is expected that students would use English during their practical training. Otherwise, ETK delegates mentors and instructors to accompany the students during the practical sessions and translate for them. The deputy dean added that, at the same time, the faculty also tries to improve the Hungarian language skills of these young people from abroad.

- At the Faculty of Health Sciences in Debrecen, international students can participate in a bachelor’s program in nursing and patient care with a specialization in physiotherapy, health care and prevention with a specialization in public health inspection and a program in public health among the master's programs. In Nyíregyháza, they can take master's programs in health social work as well as in social work and social economy, while out of the bachelor's programs, they can study nursing and patient care with a specialization in nursing. In terms of numbers, the bachelor's program in nursing and patient care has the highest number of students enrolled. Young people come to our faculty in Debrecen from around one hundred countries, while in Nyíregyháza, we have students from up to thirty different nationalities. Quite a few choose us from the Philippines, different African countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, India, and Pakistan- said the deputy dean for academic affairs and education.

In addition to providing education, the faculty also strives to help students in their everyday lives by arranging community events for them. However, the international students are also active, open-minded and proactive on their own. They have proposed that they would be happy to visit bilingual schools in Nyíregyháza, where they could introduce and present their home countries, thereby broadening the Hungarian students’ horizons and contributing to the development of their language skills.

Renáta Jávorné Erdei also said that the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Health Sciences would continue working closely with the International Education Coordination Center of UD to determine what sort of marketing strategies and activities can be implemented to find and address prospective target groups of students and what new areas of training would be worth considering for introduction in the future.
