Success of Debrecen’s Pediatric Gynecology at the World Congress

Specialists from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen presented their latest research findings in the field of pediatric gynecology at the world congress for the specialty held in the United States. Their presentations at the international conference focused on modern treatment options for complex developmental anomalies where surgical solutions previously seemed impossible. The innovative procedures presented may open new horizons in the care of rare and severe gynecological developmental anomalies.

At the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen, pediatric gynecology—a field with decades of tradition—has undergone significant professional development in recent years. As a result, the Debrecen center now plays a prominent role not only domestically but has also become a leading professional hub on the international stage.

Clinic Director Zoárd Krasznai has been working in this field for more than twenty-five years. His practice focuses on congenital developmental abnormalities of the uterus and vagina originating from the Müllerian ducts. These rare, often extremely complex abnormalities can obstruct the discharge of menstrual fluid, cause severe pain, significant anatomical abnormalities, and complex functional problems in young patients, and also significantly increase the long-term risk of developing endometriosis.

-    The management of such cases requires exceptional professional expertise, extensive experience, and multidisciplinary collaboration. “We have established a successful professional partnership with the pediatric surgery department of the Department of Pediatrics; this joint multidisciplinary work enables patients to receive personalized, state-of-the-art care even in cases of the most complex developmental disorders,” Zoárd Krasznai, associate professor and director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Debrecen Clinical Center, told unideb.hu.

Experts from Debrecen recently presented their latest scientific findings—as the only representatives from Hungary—at the World Congress of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology held in San Francisco.

At this international professional forum, Clinic Director and Associate Professor Zoárd Krasznai and Assistant Professor Szabolcs Molnár presented complex cases involving the treatment of Müllerian duct anomalies, for which surgical intervention had previously seemed impossible.

-  At the conference, we presented a special case involving modified Vecchietti vaginoplasty.  For the first time in the world, specialists from our clinic, in a joint operation with pediatric surgeons, applied the vaginal reconstruction procedure using a minimally invasive, laparoscopic technique in a young patient suffering from multiple (bladder, rectal, vaginal) developmental anomalies and had therefore undergone four reconstructive surgeries. In the group of Müllerian duct anomalies where the developmental defect affects only part of the vagina and the cervix, the greatest challenge is ensuring that the integrity of the uterus and future reproductive capacity are fully preserved during reconstruction. We have also reported on successful solutions that were permanently and successfully resolved at the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen following a series of unsuccessful surgical attempts at other institutions, emphasized Zoárd Krasznai.

The clinic director added that the high standard of patient care is underpinned not only by surgical and diagnostic expertise, but also by scientific and educational activities, which reinforce one another to ensure continuous improvement. The institution is the only center in Hungary accredited as a comprehensive training facility for the Level I and II exams of the International Federation of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. In recent years, two specialists trained in Debrecen have also successfully obtained international pediatric gynecology certification.

The clinic is also the only training center in Hungary that operates as an internationally accredited training center for the most modern endoscopic surgical techniques (Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgical Education and Assessment). The Debrecen workshop has become one of the leading domestic training centers for minimally invasive gynecological surgery.
