Back in the summer of 2021, we reported that a remarkable reinforcement came to the team of DEAC-Hackers with the arrival of Geun Yeong Kim. The South Korean esports player, who plays Tekken 7 and 8 under the name Fran, had received many requests from abroad, but he chose Debrecen University’s division. Since then, he has won numerous tournaments and finished in the top three several times. Besides esports, he studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Debrecen. A few days ago, he prolonged his contract with DEAC which was to end this summer.
“In the past years I fell in love with Debrecen, I find this city nice, quiet and safe,” Geun Yeong Kim said at the beginning of our talk. “I can’t have found a better place for myself as a student and as a professional player. This is a significant stage of my life and I consider Debrecen as my second home. I will miss this city when I return to my home country after graduation. Debrecen University has not become very attractive for Hungarian and foreign students just by accident. The whole city looks like a big university, full of campuses and students. As a medical student, I’ve been impressed by the quality, circumstances and equipment of education, and the professors’ dedication and knowledge. The university is open, cohesive, and has a great sense of community, thanks to the fact that the university organizes a lot of events for us, and this makes our life more varied and fun beyond studying. The Esports Centre established in the Nagyerdei Stadion is one proof that the university makes great efforts to develop and nurture talent in various fields,” he added.
The South Korean player thinks that it was a good decision to choose the University of Debrecen also because there are opportunities for development in several areas.
“I see that more and more students are interested in esports. If the players train systematically, then DEAC can become the best university team in Hungary and even the entire European Union. I owe a lot to Debrecen and the university, so I strive to promote this excellent higher education institution and its sports club. I share my story with people who are also professional esports players and want to study at a university,” he said.
Geun Yeong Kim does not want to slow down, as he has serious goals for both esports and studies.
“I want to make history as a member of DEAC at one of the world championships. I am also focusing on university, as I want to become a doctor and remain a professional player. It’s not going to be easy, but I’m not afraid of challenges,” the 32-year-old player concluded.
