Academic conference on sexual psychology

The most recent scientific findings in the field of sexual psychology have been discussed recently by experts at an international conference in Debrecen. This International Conference on Sexual Well-Being was organized by the joint research group (called Intercultural Sexualpsychology Research Group) formed by the Institute of Psychology of the Faculty of Humanities (BTK) at the University of Debrecen (DE) and the University of Malaga, Spain, on Wednesday, October 15, at the Headquarters of the Debrecen Academic Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

The work of the joint research group of these two institutions was started as early as in 2021 with the aim of cooperating in the broader field of sexual psychology, focusing on issues that range from prevention to intervention. Their chief areas of research include the theory and practice of modern sex education, the issues of sexual assertiveness and the clinical psychological and psychotherapeutic approach to sexual dysfunctions or disorders.

Within the framework of this collaboration, there have been a number of international publications and studies produced so far.

This recent event has been the second joint professional meeting held in Debrecen to date.

“Our conference took an interdisciplinary approach to current and topical issues related to sexuality, human relationships, and mental health, offering presentations ranging from the modernization of sex education, through the relationship between body image and self-esteem, to the mental health of sexual minorities,” said Anita Szemán-Nagy, Head of the Department of Clinical and Personality Psychology of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Debrecen, to unideb.hu.

Dr. Szemán-Nagy, the chief organizer of the recent professional conference underlined that issues such as sexual dysfunctions, problematic pornography consumption and the use of drugs for erectile dysfunction were also discussed and examined at the meeting from the perspective of clinical psychology.

Part of the significance of the conference lay in the fact that it provided a forum for expanding and sharing knowledge concerning sexual psychology both for Hungarian and Spanish researchers, as well as practitioners and students of psychology.

Other focus areas of the event included sex education and sex therapy, as both of these are of huge importance in terms of prevention and improving the quality of life.

Among other things, there were presentations given on topics such as the rethinking of sex education in the modern world, the influences of social media on sexuality, fan behavior and para-social attachment, the problems of porn use, and the origins of and treatment possibilities for sexual disorders.

The proceedings of the conference are going to be made available presently in the form of an English-language volume compiled by the organizers.
