Coimbra, Portugal, hosted the European University Games in padel and tennis. More than 100 participants from 19 universities in 12 countries took part in the week-long event. 12 university tennis teams took part in the women's event and 16 in the men's.
The women's team of the University of Debrecen finished top of the group as a result of a three-way tie-break in the group matches, with a better percentage of matches won. The first and second place finishers of the group could then fight for the podium positions, where a medal became a possibility after two tough singles matches against Regensburg, a historic event, as the 8th place was the highest ever achieved by the UD team.
In the semi-finals, the Debrecen women lost in a big battle to the Spanish women, who eventually won the gold medal. In the match for the bronze against the Italian Turin Polytechnic, the Debrecen women won the bronze medal.
In the men's competition, 16 teams competed, including the University of Debrecen. At the end of the group matches, the team from the Civic City finished third in the B quartet, finishing 14th after losing to the University of Zagreb.
The competition was described as high quality and sporting matches, but there was also time for networking and new friendships.
