Percussion Flashmob in Debrecen City Centre

Young percussionists who came to the Faculty of Music of the University of Debrecen popularized quality instrumental music with street music and advertised the concerts of the Young Musicians’ International Summer Academy. The carnival-like flashmob held in the city centre was mainly based on improvisation, which allowed the young people to get closer to the audience.

This year, 130 people, including vocational high school students, college students, university students and young music teachers will participate in 17 master’s courses at the Young Musicians’ International Summer Academy. The programmes related to the summer academy were promoted with a special flashmob and street music on Thursday afternoon in Debrecen, on Csapó Street.

“There are a lot of instrument courses at the summer academy, yet we can show very few of them to the people of Debrecen, we can only take a few instruments out to the street, but the percussion instruments are the type that can withstand the weather the best, they have a more popular soundscape and are perfectly suitable for playing on the street. Through them, we can show very well what the summer academy is about, we are trying to become the music centre of Europe in Debrecen for a few days,” said István Szabó, a professor at the Department of Brass and Percussion Instruments of the Faculty of Music of the University of Debrecen.

With the flashmob, the organizers wanted to give young people the opportunity to make spontaneous, improvisational music together, and at the same time, they also invited the public of Debrecen to the concerts, as a teaser. As Professor Szabó said, their aim was to present the classic atmosphere of the street music of carnivals as well as the musical world of improvisation with hand instruments to the people of Debrecen.

“I think nowadays it is no longer classical music that should be promoted primarily; instead, we should draw attention to quality music, to the values that touch and entertain the audience at the same time, making music deep, not superficial. This is exactly what the courses of the summer academy are about, about how the participating students deepen their music, their knowledge and their relationship with the audience. The concerts show that quality music always gives catharsis to those who are open to it,” the professor added.

As part of the Young Musicians’ International Summer Academy, the public can attend free gala concerts entitled Musical Evenings in the Great Forest. The trumpet and percussion gala will be on 14 July, Sunday, starting at 7 p.m., in the Liszt Hall of the Faculty of Music of the University of Debrecen.
