Digitalization in the focus of an international project

The section responsible for higher education of OECD’s Education Directorate had a coordination meeting with the leadership representatives on the digitalization efforts of the University of Debrecen in the framework of the project Minőségi digitális felsőoktatás biztosítása Magyarországon [Support for Quality Digital Higher Education in Hungary]. The experts and students of the university conducted an online conference with the members of the OECD staff on Tuesday.

“As one of the most significant institutions of higher education in Hungary, the University of Debrecen devotes special attention to digitalization and to the improvement of digital accessibility in order to facilitate the educational and research activities of our institution,” said Elek Bartha, Vice Rector of the University of  Debrecen, at the online meeting held on Tuesday.

Professor Bartha presented the chief parameters of the university regarding education and academic activities, its network of international relations, its top-priority areas of research and its position in international rankings.

In his presentation, our Vice Rector for Educational Affairs highlighted the fact that, during the past couple of years, following the pandemic situation, a significant progress has been achieved at the university in the area of digitalization, including the launching of several new initiatives and a number of considerable investments. At the same time, Professor Elek Bartha underlined that, due to the broad spectrum of programs running at the university, there had been quite a few fields, such as programs in medicine and in arts, where we had to realize that digital education cannot perfectly replace the traditional face-to-face formats of education.

As regards the digitalization strategy, vision and mission of our institution, Szilvia Vincze, the head of Webportál-, Alkalmazásfejlesztés és VIR Központ (WAV) [Webportal, Application Development and VIR Center] gave a talk and a video presentation titled Digitális Egyetem [Digital University], elaborating on issues such as the digital developments taking place in the institution, the webpages addressing high-school students and their parents before the entrance examinations, applications called UD Studyversity and UD Mediversity targeting the students and several other recently introduced subpages.

During the course of the online conference, there were four additional sections devoted to a variety of different areas including the following: the monitoring and evaluation of the quality of teaching and learning in online courses with the participation of Quality Assurance Rector’s Commissioner Edit Szűcs; technical, pedagogical and/or other support provided by the institution introduced by Zoltán Király, the head of Multimédia és E-learning Technikai Központ [Multimedia and E-Learning Technical Center]; and the experience of the teaching staff and the students were discussed by instructors from several faculties and the representatives of the student self-government.
