Collaboration between UD and Bessenyei High School winning an international gold medal

Recent prestigious recognitions demonstrate how successful the collaboration between the University of Debrecen (UD) and talent management in high schools has been. Róbert Nagy, a student graduating from Kisvárdai Bessenyei György High School and Dormitory in the city of Kisvárda, achieved outstanding domestic and international results with the help of professional support received from the Faculty of Science and Technology (TTK) at UD.

The young Hungarian researcher represented his country at the 32nd International Conference of Young Researchers (ICYS) in New Delhi. Having participated in this distinguished competition, he was awarded a gold medal for his oral presentation, while he also earned a special award for his poster presentation. This means that he became the most successful competitor of the entire Hungarian delegation to India.

Apart from the international success, his performance was also recognized at the domestic forefront in Hungary. In the finals of the 35th National Science and Innovation Olympiad, his project on the analysis of new bispidine ligands designed for complexing manganese ions received special praise. In recognition of his outstanding results, Róbert also won a so-called Talent Passport, which means that, as a future university student, he will be able to participate in mentored research activities right from the beginning of his studies.

A decisive part in the high-quality implementation of his research was played by the Department of Physical Chemistry of the Institute of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Debrecen. Our institution made all the necessary conditions for scientific work available to him through access to its modern instrumental and technological background, while the professional supervision was provided by Professor Gyula Tircsó and PhD student Balázs Szilágyi as his mentors.

The experimental preparation phase for the competitions was completed in the lab of the Kisvárda high school within the framework of Selye János Student Laboratory Network. For their successful assistance, the teachers of this high school, Gábor Koncz and Katalin Konczné Jámbrik, received an award for the Education and Mentoring of Creative, Scientific and Technical Talents.

The successes achieved by Róbert Nagy clearly demonstrate how serious a springboard the scientific base and intellectual workshop provided by the University of Debrecen is indeed for high school talents. Professional university mentoring and the university laboratory background in Hungary provided this young researcher with knowledge that is competitive on an international level and with which he can start his higher education studies and future scientific career confidently and with a serious professional advantage.
