The medical relief supply was transported to the Hungarian-Ukrainian border checkpoint at Záhony under the supervision of Tibor Szólláth, a member of the Board of Trustees of Gróf Tisza István Debreceni Egyetemért Alapítvány, and Ildikó Balatoni, Clinical Centre Vice President for Coordination of the University of Debrecen.
“The University of Debrecen feels solidarity with the people of Ukraine. In addition to welcoming and hosting refugees, we also try to provide further help not only in Hungary but also on the territory of Ukraine. An example for the latter is this humanitarian aid package,” said Tibor Szólláth, a member of the Board of Trustees of Gróf Tisza István Debreceni Egyetemért Alapítvány.
The donation of Gróf Tisza István Debreceni Egyetemért Alapítvány and Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen contains disposable substances required for hospital surgical care and hemostasis.
“The relief supply sent to the Ukrainian institutions of healthcare consists of bandages and dressings, scrubs and surgical caps, surgical towels, sutures, hemostatic devices and agents as well as infusion sets, primarily for use in operating theaters. We feel responsible to provide whatever assistance we can in this form, too,” said Ildikó Balatoni, Clinical Centre Vice President for Coordination of the University of Debrecen.
In the end, the vehicle sent from Ternopil to receive the aid package did not make it to Záhony, which is why the medical supply could finally cross the border with the help of the Consulate General of Hungary in Ungvár [Uzhhorod]. The consular officers of the consulate usually take a significant part in managing and coordinating the logistics of transporting and delivering relief aid sent to Ukraine.
“We made the necessary arrangements for the medical supply from the University of Debrecen to be safely delivered to the vehicle on the Ukrainian side of the border. The cooperation between our consulate and the local authorities in Subcarpathia is exemplary, and we jointly coordinate the transfer and delivery of humanitarian aid. Lately, the prime destinations for these supplies have been the inner regions of Ukraine. The choice of the actual points of delivery belongs to the Ukrainian authorities. At present, the items required mostly include non-perishables, personal hygiene products, baby care products, mattresses and blankets,” said Consul and Economic Attaché of the Consulate General of Hungary in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, Alexandra Csizmadia.
The first supply of humanitarian aid collected with the help of DEHÖK [Student Self-Government, UD] from the University of Debrecen was shipped to Ukraine last week, while the organization Debreceni Egyetem Különleges Orvos- és Mentőcsoportja [Special Medical and Rescue Group of the University of Debrecen] has also delivered 3.5 tons of medical supplies and equipment to the war-torn regions so far. Our institution intends to provide further assistance and donations in the future and offers dormitory accommodation for those fleeing from across the border to Debrecen.
