Recognition for promoting Chinese language and culture

Both director Pál Csontos and institute secretary László Erik Kovács of the Confucius Institute of the Faculty of Humanities (BTK) of the University of Debrecen (UD) have recently received a certificate of appreciation from Tianjin Foreign Studies University (TFSU) for their outstanding work in promoting Chinese culture in Hungary.

The cooperation between the two institutions of higher education was launched in an official form five years ago, following which our Confucius Institute started its operation as an independent unit within the framework of DE BTK just three years ago – as the fifth of its kind in Hungary.

The primary task of the Hungarian and Chinese teachers and volunteers employed by the institute, which was established as a result of cultural and educational cooperation between the University of Debrecen and Tianjin Foreign Studies University, China, is to introduce students to the language and culture of this Far Eastern country.

"The number of students signing up for and participating in our courses regularly has increased from the initial 60 to 600 by now. This improvement is most probably due to the high quality and continuous expansion of our educational portfolio on the one hand and to the hard work of both the Hungarian and the native-language instructors teaching at the institute on the other hand," said Pál Csontos, the Hungarian director of the Confucius Institute of the University of Debrecen, to hirek.unideb.hu portal upon receiving the certificate of appreciation.

There are going to be quite a few new courses offered by our Confucius Institute in the upcoming spring semester in addition to the formerly available subjects. For example, a module focusing on traditional Chinese medicine will be launched and, through the support of UniFit, students of UD participating in the program will also have the opportunity to learn classical Chinese dance.

The operation of the institute and its course offerings are not limited to cater for just university students and instructors. Since last September, the students of the International School of Debrecen, together with those of István Hatvani Primary School of Debrecen have also been able to get acquainted with the Chinese language and the age-old culture it is embedded in. According to the current plans, students from the eleven high schools of Debrecen’s Vocational Training Center (DSZC) will also join their ranks within the framework of extracurricular study circle classes.
