At the professional consultation, participants discussed several opportunities for academic cooperation, including in the fields of food science, agricultural and pharmaceutical sciences and, as a point of connection between these fields, the development of functional foods. For a start, Rector Zoltán Szilvássy presented a report on the complex, multidisciplinary development program for the lake Tisza-tó, the most recent food industry research findings and infrastructural developments.
Bernard Engel underlined that Purdue University traditionally offers a wide range of training programs in the fields of food, agriculture, veterinary medicine and natural sciences. However, in the field of agricultural training and, within that, in the food industry, the topic of “One Health” still has a number of untapped areas for cooperation between the two institutions.
The University of Debrecen has managed to maintain a close partnership with Purdue University so far. Several lecturers and researchers from our institution have participated in professional and practical training sessions at the Indiana-based university. In 2022, the University of Debrecen awarded an honorary doctorate to Purdue professor Zoltán Macháty.
Purdue University's College of Agriculture, which was founded in way back in 1869, is among the world's best institutions of higher education, ranking third in the United States and sixth globally in the QS World Subject Rankings 2025.
