Members of the European Federation of Biophysical Societies met at the UAS

The Executive Committee of EBSA, the European Federation of Biophysical Societies, held its latest meeting at the Faculty of General Medicine of the University of Debrecen. The two-day meeting discussed, among other things, the themes of the forthcoming professional congresses, the editing of the association's journal, and decisions were made on the grants to be awarded to young researchers.

The European Federation of Societies of Biophysics (EBSA) is governed by an Executive Committee, whose members meet twice a year to discuss in person the tasks and plans for the next period. The latest meeting was held at the Faculty of General Medicine of the University of Debrecen.

- The two-day meeting covered a wide range of topics. One of our main tasks was to prepare the scientific programme of the biannual Biophysical Congress, to agree on the agenda and to review the tasks related to organisation. In addition, we consulted on the editing of the association's journal, the European Biophysics Journal, and the quality of the articles. This is also important because a large proportion of the association's income comes from the royalties of the journal," László Mátyus, Dean of the Faculty of General Medicine, told hirek.unideb.hu.

EBSA supports meetings and conferences promoting biophysics in Europe and also contributes to biophysics research by organising schools. Grants have also just been decided.

- The Executive Committee will make the final decision on which events deserve our support. In addition, young researchers will receive grants to attend congresses and short, targeted visits to different laboratories and study trips," he added.

Experts from Europe's leading institutes and universities also discussed the editing of the biophysical encyclopaedia at the Debrecen meeting.

The European Association of Biophysical Societies was founded in 1984 primarily to promote and disseminate knowledge of the principles, recent developments and applications of biophysics and to facilitate the exchange of scientific information. László Mátyus, Dean of the Faculty of General Medicine at UD, was Secretary of the Association from 2000 to 2007, Vice President for two years from 2009, President from 2011 to 2013, and Past President from 2013. His mandate was extended for another two years at the last European Congress of Biophysics.
