At present, there are more than 4300 international students enrolled at the University of Debrecen from as many as 105 different countries. One of the largest groups of these students is from Nigeria, with a headcount of 654.
“45 out of these Nigerian students have come to Debrecen with support from the national scholarship program called Stipendium Hungaricum, and here they are enrolled in bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral programs of study in which the language of instruction is English,” said Attila Jenei, Director of Coordinating Center for International Education, in an interview to the portal unideb.hu.
At the University of Debrecen, there are currently 410 Stipendium Hungaricum students from 39 countries. The 45 Nigerian students are affiliated with the following faculties: Faculty of the Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management (5), Faculty of Science and Technology (9), Faculty of Engineering (11), Faculty of Informatics (13) and Faculty of Economics and Business (7).
“The University of Debrecen is way before its time even in this respect, as our English-language program in medicine was launched 30 years ago, and foreign-language courses have been offered at the other faculties since 2007. This specific scholarship program can be very helpful in providing an impulse for our English-language programs of study that have not been truly effective as yet. At the same time, it can also add to the multicultural variety of the entire institution by simultaneously creating chances for strengthening our international relations,” said Vice Rector for Education Elek Bartha following the official part of the visit.
The educational policy objective of the Stipendium Hungaricum program is, in line with the directives of the European Union and the European Higher education Area, to promote the internationalization and the quality development of Hungarian higher education. This national scholarship program currently caters for 51 partner countries/partner areas and as many as 4000 Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders.
