A delegation of several Indonesian institutions of higher education came to visit the University of Debrecen on Monday, whereupon agreements were signed with the Faculty of Economics and Business and the Faculty of Law.
The foreign delegation was welcomed by Károly Pető, Vice-Rector General, who then gave the delegates a brief presentation to the University of Debrecen, its past and present as well as its infrastructure and position in international rankings. At the meeting, Toni Toharudin, the head of the Indonesian delegation, expressed his satisfaction to be able to implement academic cooperation with one of Hungary's leading educational institutions.
Deputy Dean for International Affairs of the Faculty of Economics and Business László Erdey said that they had already had partners from Indonesia before, so they now have ample experience and are confident that they will establish fruitful cooperation this time as well. Associate Professor Henriett Nádasné Rab pointed out that, at the Faculty of Law, they had previously had relatively few international students; however, the courses in the programs on European and international business law, among others, had set a new path towards internationalization.
Following this, the Dean of the Faculty of Law then signed a cooperation agreement with the management of Universitas Multimedia Nusantara, while the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business did the same with representatives of Universitas Multi Data Palembang, the University of Jakarta International and ISB Atma Luhur.
“Both the University of Debrecen and its Faculty of Economics are highly committed to the cause of internationalization. We pay particular attention to fostering international relations, which is why we were pleased to be contacted by Indonesian universities. In fact, one of our current Indonesian Ph.D. students played an important part in implementing this meeting. Our initial cooperation could hopefully lead to the development of educational, research, doctoral or exchange programs in the future,” said Veronika Fenyves, Dean of GTK.
Dean of the Faculty of Law Veronika Szikora also highlighted the importance of international cooperation efforts in connection with the agreement.
“We have already had Ph.D. students coming from Indonesia before, but this new cooperation chapter opens up new directions, including new programs, academic cooperation and joint conferences,” said the head of ÁJK, listing the opportunities.
A major part in the preparation of the visit was played by the organization Magyar Indonéz Diákszövetség (PPI – Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia) [Hungarian Indonesian Students' Association], while the cooperation was supported and facilitated by Dimas Wahab, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Hungary, and Ifan Mahdiyat Sofiana, Minister Counsellor for Social and Cultural Affairs.
Vice Dean László Erdey concluded the event in the hope of fruitful cooperation, emphasizing the potential of collaborative online courses and the possibility of a new academic event of similar scale in 2026, following the highly successful joint international conference hosted by the faculties ÁJK, GTK and MK this year.
