First Ever Representative of UD in Young Academy of Europe

Young Academy of Europe, the pan-European non-governmental academy of top young scientists and scholars, has accepted the nomination of biologist-ecologist Péter Török, an associate professor of the Department of Ecology of the University of Debrecen for membership.

The organization called Young Academy of Europe (YAE) represents an initiative of about 200 young researchers currently. In close cooperation with Academia Europea, they provide expert input and advice for the prospering of science and scholarship and on scientific and scholarly issues which affect public opinion and society in general.

YAE plays a distinguished part in defining and implementing the objectives of European research financing and research strategy as well as in the efficient representation of the interests and opinions of young scientists and scholars. At present, YAE has four members from Hungary, and Péter Török is the first one of them appointed from the University of Debrecen.

An associate professor at the Department of Ecology, Péter Török has an impressive list of research interests, covering the ecology and dynamics of grassland habitats in Eurasia, with special emphasis on the relationship of biomass production and species richness, seed bank composition, and vegetation succession. He seeks answers to the question of what influence the human habitat transformation activities, the intensification of agricultural activities, habitat fragmentation, and climate change exert on the development and sustainment processes of natural ecosystems responsible for biodiversity.
