It was in the framework of what is called Cultural Tour of the European Federations and Associations of Centres of Irish Studies (EFACIS) that the Republic of Ireland's ambassador to Hungary visited the University of Debrecen on Monday, September 29.
His Excellency Ragnar Almqvist was welcomed by the heads of the Faculty of Humanities and the Institute of English and American Studies, including Péter Csatár, Vice Dean for Strategy and Economics, Balázs Venkovits, Director of IEAS, and Eszter Ureczky, Head of the Department of British Studies. The meeting focused on Irish-Hungarian cultural relations, with particular emphasis on the role played by the University of Debrecen.
As the opening event of the professional program held in the event hall A Sziget [The Island] of the Main Building, Marianna Gula, Assistant Professor at the Institute of English and American Studies, spoke with the guests about the relationship between literature and diplomacy, the multifaceted oeuvre of the diplomat’s mother spanning fifty years and the defining role of cultural feminism in her work. In addition, the audience could also gain insight into nearly two decades of Éilís Ní Dhuibhne's teaching activities in creative writing.
Following the discussion, the female author read excerpts from her own works and then shared her experiences and insights on narrative writing with a smaller group of interested participants in a creative writing workshop seminar.
