Guillermo Vázquez Moreno, ambassador of the Caribbean island nation visited the University of Debrecen for the first time. He and his colleague were welcomed by General Vice Rector Károly Pető, Okszána Kiszil, Director of Coordination and Strategy, and László Pósán, professor of the Department of World History of the Institute of History of the Faculty of Arts. Professor Pósán, as Chairman of the Hungarian National Assembly’s Committee on Culture, already had a discussion in the past on possible scientific cooperation between the two countries.
The ambassador praised Debrecen University’s multidisciplinarity, uniquely broad training portfolio, international network and the research results and directions that meet industrial demands and are ready for application in practice.
- I have planned this visit for a long time because your institution is of particular importance in this region. As an ambassador, I am dedicated to open a path between the advanced institutions of my country and the leading Hungarian universities. We are looking for cooperation especially in the fields of biotechnology and medicine which are extremely advanced in Cuba too – Guillermo Vázquez Moreno said.
During the discussion, the representatives of Debrecen University presented the institution’s comprehensive research and infrastructure system to the guests. In addition to biotechnology and medicine, the parties also discussed vaccine development, agriculture, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence as other potential fields of cooperation.
The ambassador announced that as the first actual step of the cooperation, a delegation of biotechnology specialists from Cuba will come to Hungary in March, visiting the University of Debrecen as well.
In addition to the research partnership, the ambassador also advocated the training of Cuban students in the framework of Stipendium Hungaricum. The representatives of Debrecen University highlighted that this programme also enables the PhD training of Cuban students.
After the meeting in the university’s Main Building, Guillermo Vázquez Moreno also visited the industrial park of the university located in Vezér Street, Debrecen.
