Admission: The University of Debrecen Leading the Way

As a result of the general admission procedure, a total of 6,502 first-year students can start their studies from September in the Hungarian-language programmes of the University of Debrecen. The number of students admitted in 2022, including additional admissions, students from abroad, as well as those admitted to the English-language courses, is expected to reach 10,000 by September.

The thresholds for this year’s general admission procedure were announced on Thursday evening. On the website felvi.hu, all applicants could find out which higher education institution they were admitted to.

At Campus Festival, hundreds of people were awaiting in excitement to see the numbers on the projector at the “Pont Ott” Party held at the Erasmus35 Stage – University Square, where young people jumped up in joy as they found out: their applications were successful.

More than 8,000 applicants marked the University of Debrecen as their first choice this year, of which 6,502 applicants were admitted to the institution. At a press conference held on Friday morning about the results of the general admission procedure, Elek Bartha, Deputy Rector for Education highlighted that the university can be satisfied as it remains at the forefront of Hungary’s higher education.

“This result is balanced, as it corresponds to the capacities of the University of Debrecen, and this is also what could be expected based on the applications. Based on the data currently available, with international students admitted to English language courses also factored in, the number of first-year students will exceed 9,000, and the number of applicants admitted from neighbouring countries and by way of the additional admissions procedure is expected to exceed 10,000 by September. From the applications in which the university is marked as the first choice, it is generally possible to infer the number of students that can be admitted, and the proportion of these two numbers has been improving for years, which means that an increasing number of students putting down our university as their first choice will be able to start their studies here.  Based on the experiences, if someone from the region wants to pursue studies in an engineering field, they choose the University of Debrecen, which is also supported by the cooperation agreements with industry players and companies. An important result is that the grade point averages of the new recruits based on the aggregated results is well above the minimum entry points in most cases, which is proof of the high level of preparation that applicants have. It is important to emphasise also that the international character of the university has been further strengthened, as the number of international students enrolled increased by ten percent,” said Elek Bartha, Vice-Rector for Education.

From among the various disciplinary areas, medical and health sciences (1378), economics (1153), law and public administration (655) and engineering (653) continue to be the faculties where most applicants were admitted.

Most of the first-year students (1385) will be at the Faculty of Economics, and the Faculty of Humanities was also very popular, with 837 applicants being admitted this year. Also among the most popular faculties this year was the Faculty of Law, where 655 first-year students will be able to start their studies from September.

The most popular undergraduate programme was nursing and patient care, with a total of 596 students enrolled in the various specialisations; 341 would be first-year students were admitted to the undivided law programme, and 248 applicants to the general medicine programme. From among master’s programmes, most applicants were admitted in psychology, as many as 79.

The highest threshold was in the self-financing psychology bachelor’s programme (460 points), but the requirements were also high in the undivided law (454 points) and dentistry (430) programmes.

If any applicant has found that they have suffered a violation of their rights, they may also seek legal remedy through the Education Authority, in which case they must apply to the court of law competent according to their place of residence.

Those who have not been admitted through this year’s general admission procedure can still hope to study at the University of Debrecen from September, as they will still have the opportunity to enter the institution via the additional admissions procedure.

“As in the past year, applications will be open not only for self-financing but also for state-financed programmes: the additional admissions procedure will be available for 43 undergraduate or undivided programmes in six disciplinary areas (agriculture, information technology, engineering, medicine and health science, education, and sciences). As in the general admissions procedure, applicants must submit a certifying data sheet, and they can only designate one degree programme. If the applicant is not admitted to the university through the additional admissions procedure, there is still a possibility of legal remedy, but based on the experience, the number of students eventually admitted this way is small at the national level. As a result of the additional admissions procedure, the number of would-be freshers may increase by 300-400. It is a novelty that we have expanded the training portfolio of our Szolnok Campus with two new specialisations, the basic social work and the specialised health visitor master’s programmes are first available in the additional admissions procedure this year,” Annamária Pósánné Rácz, director of education at the University of Debrecen, emphasised.

The additional admission procedure will start on 26 July and applications can be submitted via the electronic admissions system until 5 August. The point thresholds are expected to be announced on 24 August.
