Acknowledgement for an Online Program in Anatomy

The Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology of the UD has received Prize for the International Development of Higher Education – Excellent Practice for its application demonstrating the practical uses of an online surface developed for upgrading the quality of anatomy instruction.

There were 103 applications altogether submitted for consideration to win the prize in various categories announced in a tender by Tempus Public Foundation, and only eight of these received an award finally. The Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Debrecen was one of these winners in the category called Innovative Use of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Tools and Programs in Higher Education, for which the prize was awarded in Budapest on October 10, 2017.

In the winning application, Department Head Péter Szűcs, Assistant ProfessorTamás Juhász, and MD Attila Balogh, the developer of the online platform 4D Anatomy, presented the connection of the field of anatomy, with special emphasis on anatomical dissections, to a display method supported by a modern state-of-the-art online software.

This simulation tool has been used as of the beginning of the current semester in the framework of an optional course offered only at the University of Debrecen in Hungary to support practical instruction in medicine. One of the special features of this new method of instruction is that the multidimensional photographic images of specimens uploaded by the faculty and students of the Faculty of Medicine to the online database make it possible for Hungarian and international users, physicians, instructors, and students, to cooperate and exchange experience with one another. This also facilitates the popularization of the Debrecen program offered in medicine at the international level.

Besides upgrading the practical instruction of anatomy practice, the use of the internet surface also enables students to study at home on their own and to further expand and increase their knowledge of anatomy.
